I. Directions: Encircle the adverb used in each sentence and underline the word being described.

II. Directions: Identify the adverb used in each sentence. On each blank, write M if it is adverb of
manner, T if it is adverb of time, P if nit is adverb of place, and F it it is adverb of frequency.

COMPARING ADVERB
Comparisons are not only for adjectives. Adverbs may also be compared, too. Study the
following sentences.
1. The US Aircraft Pathfinder landed historically on Mars.
2. The scientists then excitedly planned an intensive study of the photographs taken.
3. They captured spectacularly the dramatic features of Mars.
Go over each group of sentences below and tell about the comparisons made.
A. 1.The US spacecraft landed more historically this year than it did 21 years ago.
1. When did it land most historically among all landings that have been done?
B. 1. The people awaited more excitedly the results of the mission than the scientists themselves.
2. The photos taken were most excitedly exhibited among the rest of the exhibits.
C. 1. The reddish hills in the background of the features were captured more spectacularly than the big
boulders and rocks.
2. The most spectacularly captured scene was the reddish-brown Martian sky.
What do you notice about the comparison made in the sentence groups? Are they similar to the
comparison of adjectives? Like adjectives, adverbs when used in comparing actions and descriptions
have positive, comparative, and superlative forms.
Study further these examples:
A.1. The scientists work hard.
2. Their assistants work harder than the scientists.
3. The crew that accomplished the mission worked the hardest of all.
How do the adverbs change in the comparative degree?in the superlative degree?
A few adverbs show comparison by means of –er and –est endings as in:
hard-harder-hardest
fast-faster-fastest
Soon-sooner-soonest
Most adverbs ending in –ly show comparison by adding more or less and most or least as in:
historically-more historically-most historically
excitedly-more excitedly-most excitedly
spectacularly-more spectacularly-most spectacularly
Still, other adverbs compare irregularly as in:
well-better-best
much-more-most
Many adverbs however, do not show comparison as in: there, once, downstairs, yesterday, and
other –ly adverbs such as squarely and perfectly.
