Field Study 2 Activity Guide

Activity 1.1 Choose an action research and make a critique review. Follow the
instructions below.

I. Summary
The use of eclectic model on reading improvement was the aim of the
research study conducted by Dizon and Sanchez (2020). The researchers
used quasi-experimental as a method to investigate the effectivity of
Eclectic Approach in enhancing the proficiency in the reading performance
of seventh grade students in Central Luzon, Philippines. The study
involved an experimental group and a controlled group. The results
revealed that eclectic model provide significant contribution than traditional
reading method. The results were based on the post test after achieving a
significant difference in the mean percentage on the experimental group.
The author concluded that using the eclectic model improves the
proficiency of students when it comes to reading. They further suggest that
it can be utilized by the teacher in the classroom and continue to test the
effectiveness of eclectic approach.

II. Review and Critique of the Study

The study came up with a positive result having the significant outcome
after using the eclectic approach. In addition, the author pointed out a good
perspective when it comes to the results of the study emphasizing that the
student participants enjoyed the reading activity which counted as a motivating
factor for learners to really love reading. However, this type of study also has
delimitation s or gaps because of the factors such as other reading strategies or
reading interventions that are similar to the chosen approach. There are other
factors also that must be considered and it must be repeated before concluding
its effective. But, the researchers also acknowledges it by recommending that this
must be utilized to further test if its effectivity is consistent. Moreover, the author
provided a comprehensive data in the literature review on the aspect of stating
the main cause of the research. In the data gathered, the tools used were

appropriate where the author clearly explained the maximization of quasi-
experimental research design identifying the scope to which the independent
variable is applied to the experiemental group. On my perspective, I think the only
missing input is the specific selection that was used. However, the author
mentioned that it was done through the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory
(PHIL-IRI) which is a standardized test itself.

In conclusion, I can commend the study because of its comprehensiveness. It is

clearly pointed out the direction of the research study where the main focus is
utilizing the eclectic model to initiate intervention. The data gathering is also
organized. This research is still an uttermost timely and relevant since the
pandemic also added to the problem on teaching reading. The model used would
be useful since there are many discovered strategies now under the programs of
the Department of Education (DepEd) where it seeks new ways to improve the
reading skills of the learners. In the study of Alsayad (2019), teachers underwent
problems upon the implementation of this model. Although on the other hand, I
agree that the research needs further study to test its consistency during the
implementation just like the author’s proposal in the recommendation. This study
will be beneficial to the teachers as the prime implementers of the curriculum.

III. Application and Conclusion

School reading enhancement activities have been one of the main main thrust of
the government for many years to address illiteracy and allow comprehension to
be mastered at least. The eclectic model will be relevant to be tested in the
seventh grade students since it will become a pre-test after graduating from
elementary. They are also the appropriate subjects because in high school, the
level of complexity is increasing due to the K to12 program’s Spiral progression.

To conclude, I find the study relevant and feasible because under the DepEd’s
PHIL-IRI program, variety of ways can be done to help improve the learners’
reading skill most especially that reading proficiency is still an on-going problem
in the Philippine education system. The study on maximizing the Eclectic Model

on reading enhancement has a comprehensive presentation of data since the
experimental and controlled group clearly showed significant difference.

Although, the research encounters gaps, it is still recommended to be adopted

and implemented in schools to further test the effectivity. I also observed that
there is a positive response among the participant since the author stated that
they had fun while doing the activity. Through the eclectic model, learners can
learn reading in their own pace through various approaches and methods.

On the gist. Write your reflection by completing the following statements.

I realized that there are lots of school programs and school policies that are relevant
and achievable. There is a must for those programs to be implemented especially
that a huge learning gap has been hampering the education quality.

I believe it is essential to strengthen research studies so that there will be

appropriate measures to be done and at least alleviate the inevitable after effects of
modular learning.

From now on, I am determined to do seek further in-depth studies that may help
find solutions and at least make a move to address educational concerns even
before the pandemic began. We must cultivate underlying causes of the long-
standing issues in the school.
