JOB TITLE: Business Development Manager


Reports to: Deputy Director
Department: Development and Events
Hours: full time
Six months contract
Salary: c. £35,000 pro rata, based on experience

Overview
The Business Development Manager is responsible for researching, negotiating
and leading contract negotiations with new sponsors for the Design Museum.
They are also responsible for managing the implementation of sponsorship
agreements to ensure that all contracted obligations are met and exceeded at all
times.

The Business Development Manager works across the Design Museum teams
to ensure that exhibitions, public programmes and other projects are supported
by sponsorship packages which provide the right balance of mutual benefits
between sponsors and the museum. They will work to build strong relationships
with sponsors which will lead to repeat business.

The Business Development Manager works within a team of seven which


include two Development Managers, a Development Coordinator on the
fundraising side and a Senior Events Manager, an Event Manager and Event
Coordinator on the Event side.

Job Description

DEVELOPMENT
• To provide excellent account management for existing sponsors

• To ensure current key prospects are converted into sponsors

• To develop and implement sponsorship packages for corporate clients


which maximise revenue for the museum
• To work creatively with colleagues throughout the museum to develop
new initiatives to engage new sponsors and retain existing ones as well
as investigating new income streams from the corporate sector

• To lead negotiations of key sponsorships through to contract stage, with


the support of the Deputy Director

• To set up procedures and resources for identifying and cultivating new


corporate prospects

• To carry out research on target sponsors in line with the museum’s ethical
guidelines

• To provide excellent donor care, ensuring sponsors enjoy a friendly and


productive rapport with the Museum and that their objectives are fulfilled

• To maximise opportunities for the retention and upgrade of sponsors

• To create high quality sponsorship proposals and materials to ensure


they reflect high design values and are consistent with the museum’s
overall messages, working closely with the Communications Team

• To work with the Exhibitions Team to secure in-kind support for


exhibitions as required

• To work with the Events Team to deliver sponsors’ events

• To maintain a professional activity in line with best practice

• To ensure that all contacts are logged in the museum’s development


database

GENERAL
• To work positively with the Director, Deputy Director and Development
Committee in order to enhance income generation

• To liaise effectively with all museum departments

• To act as an ambassador for the Museum at private views, cultivation


events and other events, both inside and outside the museum.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE


• 3 to 5 years’ experience of sponsorship fundraising
• Excellent account management experience
• Ability to develop new business
• A demonstrable record of achieving financial targets
• Ability to work comfortably with a wide range of supporters and
prospective supporters, and at a senior level
• Excellent donor servicing skills
• Excellent verbal and written skills with attention to detail
• Awareness of legal and tax regulations associated with sponsorship and
charity law
• Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Enthusiasm for design

transformation of a Thameside warehouse near Tower Bridge. Since then it has
emerged as an institution with international status and significance, playing a
vital role in making design and architecture a part of the cultural agenda.
