REMEMBER

• Line is the foundation of all drawings. It can be used to suggest the shape,
pattern, form, structure, distance, rhythm, movement and even emotions.

The following are the different types of lines:

1. Curved Lines- suggest comfort and ease.

2. Horizontal Lines- suggest distance and calm.

3. Vertical Lines- suggest height and strength.

4. Jagged lines or zigzag lines- suggest turmoil and anxiety.

Lines also have expressive qualities. The following are some of them:

1. Continuous lines- Lead the eye to a certain direction.

a. Maps- use lines as a symbolic representation between places. They tell

how to get from “her” to “there.”
b. Floor plan- is a specialized kind of map that shows the view of the
different rooms in a house or building.

c. Graphs – are made up of lines to visually communicate quantitative

information and relationships.

2. Broken Lines- can express temporariness.

3. Thick Lines – appear difficult to break. They suggest strength.

4. Thin Lines – suggest fragility. They appear easy to break or to knock

over.
• Shape -is produced by lines. It can be two- dimensional or three-
dimensional.

1. Two- dimensional (2D) shape- is a shape that has width and length but
no depth. It has a flat surface that extends in every direction.

2. Three- dimensional (3D) shape- is a solid shape that exists in three

dimensions, including width, length, and depth. Most things around us
are made up of three- dimensional shapes.
The three basic types of shapes are the following:

1. Geometric shapes – these are made up of regular patterns that are

easily recognizable. They tend to be symmetrical, suggesting
structure and organization.

Examples of Geometric shapes:

2. Natural shapes- these are irregular, asymmetrical, and free form

shapes. They are linked to things from the nature like plants, leaves,
flowers, fruits, tree, and animals.

3. Abstract shapes- these are stylized or simplified versions of

natural shapes.
