LessonPlan G7 Mean Median and Mode of Ungrouped Data

The document provides a lesson plan on finding the mean, median, and mode of ungrouped data. It begins with objectives to define these measures of central tendency and find them using ungrouped data. The learning procedure introduces the measures, provides examples of calculating the mean and median, and explains how to find the median of data sets with odd and even numbers of values. The lesson aims to help students understand and apply these statistical concepts in real world contexts like determining average shoe sizes.

Answer: Northern Mindanao
6. Motivation
Bob was hired to be the shoe supplier of the Roxas Soccer Team.
The team captain gave him the list of the shoe sizes of the players and
told him that the shoes were needed immediately for the upcoming game.
To help Bob supply the shoes immediately, you need to know the
most requested shoe size and the average size. Here is the list of
shoe size: 8, 9, 8, 10, 9, 8,12, 9, 11, 9.
a. What do you think is the most requested shoe size?
Answer: 9
b. What about the average shoe size?
Answer: 9.3
B. Presentation
The measures of central tendency are valuable tools used to describe
and summarize information from a data set. The measures of central tendency
include the mean, median, and mode.

C. Developmental Activities

Mean
The most commonly used measure of central position is the mean ( x ). It
is referred to as the mathematical average that considers all values in the set of
data. It is also affected by outliers which refer to very small or very large values in
a given data set. To find the mean of a given data set, divide the sum of all data
points by the number of data points in the set. This is given by the formula:
Σx
x=
n
Where x is the set of data points;
Σ x is the sum of the data points;
n is the total number of data points.

Example 1: The ages of seven employees in Ponce’s Café are 35, 22, 26, 27,
19, 23, and 22. Calculate the mean age of the employee.

Solution:
To solve for the mean, add all the values in the data set and divide the
sum by 7. That is,
Σx 35+22+ 26+27+19+ 23+22 174
x= → x= →x= =24.86
n 7 7

Therefore, the mean or average age of the employees is 24.86.

Example 2: Trixie and Joy are playing video games. They need an average
score of 10 to level up. They got the following series of scores: 7, 8, 9, 10,
and 12. What should be there last score to reach an average of 10?

Solution:
Let x represent their score in the last game. Solving for the mean,
7+ 8+9+10+ x
10=
6
46+ x
10=
6
46+ x
(6) 10= (6)
6
60=46+ x
60−46=x
14=x
Thus, Trexie and Joy must have a score of 14 in the last game.

Median
One way to obtain an accurate representation of the data is the median.
The median or positional average is the central value of the data set and is
denoted by Md or ~x . In this measure, a few values are considered and either
very small or very large values do not affect its value. The median is the
middle value in a data set. That is, the scores must be arranged in
ascending or descending order before identifying the median.
To find the median of a set with an odd number of values:
1. Arrange the values in ascending or descending order.
2. Count the total number of data and denote it as n .
3. Use the following formula to locate the position of the median given by

n+1
Median =
2

Example 3: A group of students from Grade 7-Masipag obtained the following

scores in math quiz: 7, 8, 7, 9, 10, 10, 6, 8, and 5. Determine the group’s
median score.

Solution:
Arrange the values in ascending order: 5, 6, 7, 7, 8, 8, 9, 10, 10
Count the total number of data and denote it as n : n=9
Solving for the median, you have
9+1 10 th
Md= = =5
2 2
Locate the 5th score in the data set: 5, 6, 7, 7, 8, 8, 9, 10, 10
Therefore, 8 is the middle score in the Math quiz.

To find the median of a set with an even number of values:

1. Arrange the values in ascending order.
2. Count the total number of data and denote it as n .
3. To locate the position of the two middle values, use the formulas

( n2 )th and ( n2 +1)th

4. Solve the average of the two middle values.

Example 4: the grades in Algebra of ten students are 85, 82, 89, 86, 85, 88, 89,
91,88, and 84. Solve for the median score.

Solution:
Arrange the values in ascending order: 82, 84, 85, 85, 86, 88, 88, 89, 89, 91
Count the total number of data and denote it as n : n=10
Determine the two middle scores:

( n2 ) th= 102 =5 ;
th
( n2 )+1= 102 +1=5+ 1=6 th

Hence, the two middle scores are the 5th and 6th scores.

82, 84, 85, 85, 86, 88, 88, 89, 89, 91

↑↑
5th 6th
Computing the average of the two middle scores, you have

~ 86+ 88 174
x= = =87
2 2
Therefore, 87 is the median score of the data set.

Mode
In measure of central tendency, the mode, denoted as Mo, is the value
that occurs most frequently in a set of data. It is possible for a dataset to have
more than one mode. However, it is also possible to have no mode in a data set.
In the business industry, the mode is used to identify the most saleable and most
popular goods in the market.
If the set of data has one mode, it is considered as unimodal. If it has two,
three, or more modes, the data is called bimodal, trimodal, or multimodal,
respectively.

Example 5: A footwear shop sold shoes with the following sizes in an hour: 35,
38, 39, 38, 37, 34, and 36. Find the modal shoe size.

Solution:
Observe that the shoe size that appeared the most is 38. Thus, Mo=38.

Example 6: Enzo recorded the scores of seven dogs during a dog show
competition. His record showed the following scores by one of the judges:
11, 9, 12, 5, 15, 13, and 8. What is the modal score of the given data?

Solution:
There is no modal score in the given set of data since all have the same number
of frequencies.

Example 7: A survey on the most liked subject was conducted among 10 Grade
7 students. The result were English, English, Science, Filipino, Math,
Math, Science, English, History, and Math. Determine the mode of
the given set of responses.

Solution:
Determine the frequency of each subject, that is, English=3, Science=2,
Filipino=1, Math=3, and History=1. Since English and Math have the highest and
equal frequencies, the modes of the given set are both English and Math.

D. Guided Practice
Consider the given scenario and answer the following questions.
The Supreme Student Council of Bulusan Montessori posted the number
of students in each station for the Foundation Day.

Garnet Amethyst Aquamarin Diamond Emerald Sapphire

53 53 e 51 53 50
49
Peridot Opal Topaz Ruby Pearl
52 51 50 49 51 1.
What is the
average number of students per station?
2. What is the median of the data?
3. If Emerald is disqualified for a competition, then what will be the median of the
data set?
4. What is the mode of the data?

To determine the answers to the given questions, solve for the measures of
central tendency.

Mean: Add all the number of students and divide by the total number of stations.

___________
= =
Median: Write all the numbers of students in ascending order and find the middle
number of students per station. Since the set has an odd number of values,
consider the number in the middle.

If Emerald is disqualified for a competition, then what would be the median of the
data set?

Since the set will have an even number of values, consider the two middle
values and determine their average. Thus, the median for this set is _____.

Mode: Find the number of the students that occurs the most.

The mode of the set is Mo=¿ ¿.

Answer:
1. Mean: x=51.09
2. Median: ~
x=51
3. Median: ~
x=51
4. Mode: Mo={51 , 53 }

2. How to solve the mean in a given set of data?

even number of values?
4. How to determine the modal of the data?
