THE EFFECTS OF SHORTAGE IN HYGIENIC MATERIALS TO

THE HEALTH OF GRADE 11 GAS STUDENTS

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the study

Introduction

Hygiene is a word that refers to maintain living through cleanliness. [1]

According to the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, hygiene is

critical for preventing the spread of infectious disease and helping to live healthy lives. It

also prevents them to affect their academic performance which results in better learning

outcomes. These are personal hygiene materials that will make us feel comfortable in

using a comfort room, including absorbent tissues and sanitary products. According to

Deborah Weatherspoon, PHD, MSN and Hand Ames (2020), keeping the body clean has

positive effects on a person’s life and mental health that will help you to achieve proper

hygiene.

Condition related to the topic

Half of the Healthcare facilities worldwide have experienced a lack of hygienic

materials. According to the latest joint monitoring programmed (JMP) report by who and

UNICEF (2022), around 3.85billion people use facilities without proper hygienic

materials and this are caused by putting the people at greater risk of infection. The newly

established global estimate reveals clearer and more alarming information about the state

of hygiene in healthcare facilities, including their toilet facilities. The proportion of

facilities with no

sanitation services ranged from 3% in Latin America, the Caribbean, Eastern, and South-

Eastern Asia to 22% in Sub – Saharan Africa. I the least developed countries, just 1 in 5

(21%) had basic sanitation services in different facilities. The data further reveals that

many of the facilities undergo a shortage of hygienic materials and inadequate hygiene.

Factors contributing to the focus of the study

The contributing factors of the effects of shortage in hygienic materials in the

worldwide are lack of health education and lack of government support for the reason

that the government have funds but not prioritize the hygienic materials that will need of

the school or community.

Condition of the topic locale/ in your school

[2] According to De Lima (2019), the Philippines has long struggled with poor

hygiene and sanitation conditions, and the resolutions still seem uncertain because of the

shortage of hygienic materials. The admission of Health secretary Francisco Duque that

only two percent of Filipino households have improved toilet facilities that are not shared

with other households, showing that around 26 percent or around 26 million Filipinos still

use unimproved facilities. The Life and health of Filipinos, particularly the youth are

negatively impacted by the lack of personal proper sanitation and hygiene.

Page | 2
THE EFFECTS OF SHORTAGE IN HYGIENIC MATERIALS TO
THE HEALTH OF GRADE 11 GAS STUDENTS

Based on the data gathered from the school clinic, 30% of the school’s population

are experiencing menstrual cramps due to their menstruation, colds, diarrhea, flu, and

urinary tract infection because of the shortage of hygienic materials in school.

Reason of the conduct of the study

The effects of the shortage of hygienic materials you can get different types of

disease. Hygiene is very important because it can reduce the risk of getting infections and

it can also make us feel comfortable and safe while using the comfort room. On the other

hand, of you do not have enough supply it will waste your time by finding different

hygienic materials, and it might be hassle for you to find. Furthermore, the researchers

would like to conduct this study because we want to provide a product that will help the

students when a comfort room to prevent them from the risk of getting an infection by the

shortage of hygienic materials.

As a proposed solution to this problem, the researchers conceptualize the affordable

vendo machine of hygienic materials. The first modernized coin-operated vending

machines were established in London, England in the early 1880s. The machine was

invented by Percival Everitt in 1883 and soon developed a widespread feature at railway

stations and post offices, dispensing envelopes, postcards, and notepaper. Nowadays,

there are different types of vendo machines – vendo machines for food, drinks and

hygienic materials.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter provides an overview of literature about hygienic materials that

affects health and the development of this topic.

[3] According to Palgo J.Med (2018) stated that shortage of hygienic materials

can detrimentally affect the well-being such as getting infection, reduce ability to

concentrate, and trigger a negative mindset. It is also mention that the students are among

the most affected beneficiaries. Several empirical studies have focused on the lack of

sanitary materials during menstruation of the female students [4] (Dasgupta A and Sarkar

M, 2008), and estimated that patients have suffered from infections due to poor hygiene

of the health care providers and inadequate hygienic materials of the facilities in the

hospital [5] (Allegranzi B et.al., 2015), while a systematic review by [6] R Yonli et.al.

(2001) affirmed a relationship between practicing of proper hygiene and high risk of

getting an infection for children and adults.

In contrast, according to [7] Howard H. Chang et.al (2016) Article: The Impact of

a School-Based Sanitation and Hygiene Program on Diarrhea. They conduct a multiarc

trial of comprehensive school-based sanitation and hygiene interventions in Kenya found

Page | 4
THE EFFECTS OF SHORTAGE IN HYGIENIC MATERIALS TO

a self-reported diarrhea among students in school even if they received water supply and

enough hygienic materials, they have still no positive effects for the students in school

that undergo a hygiene promotion. A handwashing and use of hygienic resources in China

found no significant effect on diarrhea illness due to malpractices of proper hygiene and

using toilet

facilities. Therefore, the number of students having a diarrhea didn't change even they did

a proper hand washing and use of hygienic materials to have a healthful living.

[8] According to Argaw Ambelu and Worku Legesse (2004) there is a relationship

between shortage of hygienic materials and community. It is mentioned that personal

hygiene is a measure taken at individual community in the level to promote personal

cleanliness and awareness of using hygienic materials in toilet facilities so that getting an

infection can be prevented. [9] According to Bassey Theresa et.al. (2018) stated that there

is a relationship between shortage of hygienic materials and environment because

environmental sanitation is a basic and powerful driver of human development as it

affects the quality of life of the students. This means that many diseases can be prevented

through good personal hygiene, adequate hygienic materials, and by keeping the

environment clean. [10] According to estimates of the United Nations Children's Fund

(2005) there is a relationship between the shortage of hygienic materials and academic

performance. [11] They stated that about one in ten school-age African girl didn't attend

school during menstruation or dropped out at puberty due to lack of cleanliness and

hygienic materials for female students at schools, and this was also significantly
Page | 5

associated with school absenteeism and decreased in academic performance (Mohammed

M, 2014). Community, Environment, and Academic Performance can affect the results,

but these will not include in our study.

Based on this literature, we concluded that there is a relationship between the

shortage of hygienic materials to the health and safety of the students. Based on the

research we conducted, there are so many negative impacts of the shortage of hygienic

materials to the health and safety of the students. Particularly in getting an infection due

to the lack of

hygienic materials. We found out that having adequate and proper use of hygienic

materials can help us to reduce our chances of illnesses, diseases, and infections.

NARRATIVE EXPLANATION

The expected cause, "the shortage of hygienic materials," is the independent

variable and it doesn't depend on any variable of this study. On the other hand, the

expected effect, "health and safety of the students," is the dependent variable that depends

on the independent variable (the shortage of hygienic materials). High risk of getting

infection (mediator) is affected by the shortage of hygienic materials. If there is a

shortage of hygienic materials (IV), then it can result a high risk of getting infection that

will affect the health and safety of the students. Practice of proper hygiene (moderator)

will not be affected. Even if every school toilet facility has enough hygienic materials, it's

still be inapplicable if the students have insufficient practice of proper hygiene, therefore

it can be resulting that the hygienic materials will be only useless. The 3-control variable

included in the study are Community, Environment, and Academic performance. Lack of

hygienic materials can result a disease outbreak within a society, that's why the

committees provide a rules and management plans, location, and the level of community

participation (1). Without proper sanitation facilities can contaminated communities’

hygiene, therefore there's an increasing of infection for other individuals (2). It's possible

that the shortage of hygienic materials can affect the academic performance of a student

due of getting an

infection that may result to absenteeism (3). The 3 control variables still affect our

results, but these will not include in the study.

CHAPTER II

METHODS AND PROCEDURES

This chapter covers various methodologies that were employed to gather pertinent

research-related data. The methodology will cover things like the research design,

location of the study, sampling and sample size, administration of the research

instruments, data collection techniques, proper statistical treatment of data, a strategy for

data analysis, and ethical considerations involving letters of permission and consent.

RESEARCH DESIGN

Page | 16
THE EFFECTS OF SHORTAGE IN HYGIENIC MATERIALS TO
THE HEALTH OF GRADE 11 GAS STUDENTS

The researchers used a quantitative research design to collect data for this study.

This study uses quantitative research to let you measure variables and test hypotheses in a

methodical way. [19] A causal comparative method was selected to identify the cause-

and-effect relationships between independent and dependent variables. This method can

help to determine the consequences or causes of differences that already exist within or

between various groups of people (John Oppenhimer, 2017).

[20] Quantitative Research refers to the systematic investigation in the case in

which a person doing the researcher collects the data from the different respondents that

are based on numerical figures and data obtained is then analyzed for obtaining the

results using different mathematical, statistical and computational tools. (Krishna

Shenmare, 2020).

[21] In contrast qualitative research is a process of naturalistic inquiry that seeks

an in-depth understanding of social phenomena within their natural setting. It focuses on

the "why" rather than the "what" of social phenomena and relies on the direct experiences

of human beings as meaning-making agents in their everyday lives. (University of Utah

College of Nursing, (n.d.), 2018).

RESEARCH SETTING

The study was conducted last February 2023 at San Vicente Pilot School for

Philippine Craftsmen located at Bulaon Resettlement Site, City of San Fernando,

Pampanga.

Page | 17

RESPONDENTS/ SAMPLING AND SAMPLE SIZE

The participants of the study included the Grade 11 Gas Students in San Vicente

Pilot School for Philippine Craftsmen, Bulaon Resettlement Site, City of San Fernando,

Pampanga, year 2023. All of these participants were chosen through cluster (area)

sampling method. This sampling method is conducted to randomly select a group become

a sample. Students from Grade 11 Elizabeth GAS students will be the sample of the

study. This group were chosen by the researchers because they were suitable and

applicable for the study.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The researchers used survey to gather numerical data to determine statistical

results. The survey consists of (11) close-ended questions form, as it is effective in

collecting quantitative data. To ensure the reliability of the survey, the researches ensured

that the participants agreed to answer it truthfully. We also gathered information about the

medical records of the students in the school clinic of San Vicente Pilot School for

Philippine Craftsmen. The shortage of hygienic materials that the respondents experience

was the basis for the survey. The survey is divided into three parts, the first section

consists the consent that the respondents need to answer. Second section of the survey

consist the demographic profile of the respondents. Third section of the survey are the
Page | 18

THE HEALTH OF GRADE 11 GAS STUDENTS

questions that the respondents need to answer, these are about the hygienic materials of

the school comfort room, their experience in shortage of hygienic materials. And the

effects of not having enough hygienic materials and how this problem affect their health.

DATA COLLECTION PROCEDURE

After establishing the validity and reliability on how to gather-data, formulating

survey that contains appropriate close-ended questions for the study and all doing

necessary modification to the chosen respondent. Firstly, the researchers made a

permission for the approval of the Principal, Head Teacher, and Teachers involved before

gathering data. The participants from the Grade 11 Gas Students were chosen through

cluster (area) sampling and ensure that the participants agreed to the terms and conditions

before answering the survey questions voluntarily via Google form. The survey process

started from May 26, 2023 and we expected to collect the data by May 29, 2023. The

researchers also ask for the assistance of the class president to disseminate the survey

questions to his/her classmates. Lastly, after collecting the responses of the participants,

the researchers will immediately tally and interpret the information gathered.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA

[22] According to Vishak (2023), by converting raw data into something that can

be evaluated and utilized to inform decisions, statistical treatment of data is the easiest

way to interpret the data that had been gathered.

Page | 19
THE EFFECTS OF SHORTAGE IN HYGIENIC MATERIALS TO
THE HEALTH OF GRADE 11 GAS STUDENTS

To analyze and interpret the data, the researchers employed the following

statistical procedure:

1. Mean. Get the mean or the sum of a collection of numbers divided by the count of

numbers in the collection.

[23] According to Jim Frost (2021), Mean is a single number that represents the middle or

typical value of a whole data set. It is often referred to as the "average".

Formula:

Sum of all the observations

M= ----------------------------------------------
Total number of observations

2. Frequency and Percentage Distribution. The method of identifying the total number

of observations supplied as data points is done using the frequency and percentage.

[24] According to Bob Hayes (2015), In a data set, the frequency is the total number that

fall within a given range or category. The proportion of a certain number to all the other

numbers in a data set is expressed as a percentage.

Formula:

P= F ÷ N × 100

P- percentage

Page | 20
THE EFFECTS OF SHORTAGE IN HYGIENIC MATERIALS TO
THE HEALTH OF GRADE 11 GAS STUDENTS

F- frequency

N- number of respondents

3. Ranking. [25] The researchers will do the ranking to identify the results of the

interpreted data that are making the most significant contributions to their field.

4. Pearson correlation coefficient - to evaluate the significant relationship between the

Independent and Dependent variable.

[26] According to Shaun Tumey (2022), the most popular method for determining a linear

connection is the Pearson correlation coefficient (r). The intensity and direction of the

link between two variables is expressed as a number -1 and 1.

Formula:

DATA ANALYSIS PLAN

This study is about the Effects of Shortage of Hygienic Materials to the Health

and safety of the Grade 11 gas students and involves a variety of procedures using the

collected data. The following procedures would be included in the data analysis plan:

Page | 21
THE EFFECTS OF SHORTAGE IN HYGIENIC MATERIALS TO
THE HEALTH OF GRADE 11 GAS STUDENTS

1. Summarizing the numerical data. This would be done through a tally that will be based

on the certain answer of the respondent in the survey questionnaires using frequency and

percentage.

2. Mathematical/Statistical Interpretation of the summarized data using the weighted

mean, percentage, and ranking. To test the significant relationship of independent and

dependent variable Pearson Correlation Coefficient is applied.

3. Tables and graphs were used for visual presentation of summarized data.

4. Verbal interpretation of numerical data.

ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS

The conducting of research requires not only expertise and diligence, but also honesty

and integrity. This is done to recognize and protect the rights of human subjects. To

render the study ethical the rights of human subject, the rights to self-determination,

Page | 59
THE EFFECTS OF SHORTAGE IN HYGIENIC MATERIALS TO
THE HEALTH OF GRADE 11 GAS STUDENTS

Using the Pearson Correlation Coefficient it was found that there was a significant

relationship between Shortage of Hygienic Materials to the Health and Safety of the

Students. Thus, the scatterplot was close to the linear line and the correlation coefficient

value was 0.9 so it’s under medium positive correlation. The two variables were found to

have a medium positive correlation, their relationship was significant. Moreover, several

researches have shown, shortage of hygienic materials has negative impact to the health

and safety of the people. Most of them had experienced of getting an infection due to

insufficient supply or improper practice of using hygienic materials. Especially the

women who needs to change their sanitary napkin immediately during their menstruation

to prevent of having rashes.

Since the Pearson correlation coefficient has small positive correlation that measures .1 to

.3, medium positive correlation that measures .3 to .5, and large positive correlation that

measures .5 to 1.0, the result of the scatterplots/linear line between the two variables of

the study was resulted as medium positive correlation. There was a significant

relationship between Shortage of Hygienic Materials and to the Health and Safety of the

Students. Shortage of Hygienic Materials affects the Health and Safety of the Students.
