ALS Teaching Assignment 3 - June 2021 V1
On the Generic Instructor Course (GIC), you are practising the skills of a provider course
instructor and facilitating a variety of teaching sessions. You need to prepare these sessions
before you attend the course so please take time to read the information below.
Background Reading
Read the ‘Pocket Guide to Teaching for Clinical Instructors’ (the ‘blue book’) and complete
the online modules. These resources will help you understand the different teaching
approaches explored and practised on the course. You should be familiar with the provider
course material in advance of the face-to-face component of the GIC, which will ensure that
core knowledge taught is consistent with the contemporary practice in ALSG and RCUK
publications.
The core skills relating to each of the five teaching assignments on the course are listed
below with the content you require in order to prepare. All teaching assignments are run
within the framework of Environment, Set, Dialogue and Closure (see ‘blue book’) and are
supported by online demonstrations by faculty (please see the topic videos). The teaching
assignments are continuously assessed using the matrices available on the teaching
assignments page of the VLE, and you will receive guidance, coaching and feedback from
faculty members regarding your general facilitation skills for each session, as well as being
scored as either ‘achieved’ or ‘needs further development’ for each teaching practice.
At the top of the course programme, you will find detailed timings for each of your practice
sessions and you should refer to this before you start your preparation.
• You will be expected to deliver a lecture to your group on the above subject using the
content from slides available to download within your teaching assignment.
• You can download the slides and save them to your own device. You may use as many
or as few of the slides as you wish; you do not have to use all the slides. Consider an
appropriate introduction and summary slide if they are not part of the slide set sent to you.
• If you are undertaking the remotely enhanced GIC you will present your lecture online.
• You will be expected to lead a skill station covering the specific skill as stated above.
You should assume that any pre-cursor to your aspect of the skill has already been
covered and, therefore, focus on a seemingly small element of skill practice. You will be
expected to lead a skill station, teaching your colleagues and faculty using the four stage
skills teaching method, whilst assessing candidate performance of the skill.
• You will be expected to coach candidates appropriately with the aim of facilitating
independent practice within a framework of continuous assessment.
• You will be expected to facilitate learning within a small group using either a workshop,
case study or focused group discussion on the above topic. The topic is not taken
directly from the provider course teaching materials but is relevant to your provider
course background.
• You should think carefully about your learning outcomes and how you will achieve this
with your group; this involves you deciding in advance which aspects of the topic you will
focus upon.
• You may prepare visual aids, but you should consider how and whether these may help
you achieve your learning outcomes. This session has to be something other than a
lecture around a flipchart and you should carefully consider ways of encouraging
candidate interaction. Equipment varies from centre to centre (e.g. white boards/flip
charts/overhead projection) so consider carefully any other supporting materials you may
wish to use e.g. ECG.
• You will facilitate a simulation session, using the scenario given above as the basis for
the teaching. You will work with a co-instructor.
• The time allocated for this includes feedback to the candidate, so you should plan to use
only an extract of the allocated scenario.
• Your candidate debrief will use the learning conversation.
• You will be expected to carry out a simulation assessment using the scenario above. The
testing sheet provided includes key treatment points that need to be met during the
assessment process.
• You will discuss candidate performance with your co-Instructor, before communication
the result to the candidate. You should choose only a small segment of the assessment
simulation scenario that you have been given.
Faculty provide coaching during your teaching sessions and you will be expected to engage
with the feedback process with the rest of your group and the faculty. This will form the basis
for individual reflection and planning for subsequent teaching practices as an IC. If you have
any queries regarding the course and what will be required of you, please use the discussion
board or contact the Course Centre for clarification as soon as possible.
