2020 Worked Examples

This document contains tutorial questions and answers on topics related to atomic energy levels and spectra. 1. It asks about transitions in the energy level diagram of an atom with an electron in the n=3 level, and the colors of light absorbed and emitted by such transitions. 2. It calculates the energy of a photon of green light observed in the hydrogen emission spectrum with a given wavelength. 3. It asks about the wavelength and region of the electromagnetic spectrum for the first line of the Lyman series in hydrogen.

Tutorial Questions and Answers

1. Given the following energy level diagram for an atom that contains an electron in the n=3
level, answer the following questions.

a) Which transition of the electron will emit light of the lowest frequency?
b) Using only those levels depicted in the diagram, which transition of the electron
would require the highest frequency light?
c) If the transition from the n=3 level to the n=1 level emits green light, what color
light is absorbed when an electron makes the transition from the n= 1 to n=3
level?
(a) n=3 to n=2 (b)n=3 to n=5 (c) green

2. A green line of wavelength 4.86 x 10-7 m is observed in the emission spectrum of

hydrogen. Calculate the energy of one photon of this green light.
hc
E= =(6.626 x 10-34 J.s)(3.00 x 108 m/s)/(4.86 x 10-7m)
λ
= 4.09x 1019 J/photon

3. The first line of the Lyman series of the hydrogen atom emission results from a transition
from the n=2 level to then n=1 level. What is the wavelength of the emitted photon?
Describe the region of the electromagnetic spectrum in which this emission lies.
4. Calculate the energy required to excite the hydrogen atom from level n = 1 to level n = 2.
Also calculate the wavelength of light that must be absorbed by a hydrogen atom in its
ground state to reach this excited state.
Method 1

E1= -2.178 x 10-18J (12 /12) = -2.18 x 10 -18 J

E2= -2.178 x 10-18J (12 /22) = -5.445 x 10 -19 J
Δ E=E2-E1= -5.445 x 10 -19 J-(-2.18 x 10 -18 J)= -1.63 x 10 -18 J
λ = hc/ Δ E [0.5 mk]
= (6.626 x 10-34 J.s x 3.00 x 108 m s -1 ) / -1.63 x 10 -18 J=1.22 x 10 -7 m

Method two

λ = 1.097 x 107 m-1 (1/12 – 1/22 ) = 1.22 x 10 -7 m

Δ E = hc/ λ
=(6.626 x 10-34 J.s x 3.00 x 108 m s -1 ) / 1.22 x 10 -7 m = 1.63 x 10 -18 J

5. Calculate the maximum Kinetic Energy (in joules) and velocity (3 significant figures) of
an electron ejected from zinc by a 275 nm photon. (1 eV = 1.60 x 10 -19J) and (Threshold
energy for Zn 4.31eV).
1
K .E= me v 2 = hν− h° ν °
Solution: 2 K.E=0.2eV= 3.2x10-20J ,
To determine velocity, use KE=1/2mv2, mass and K.E are known so Velocity=
2.65x105 m/s

6. Calculate the mass of photon of wave length of 3.6 A° (calculate in SI unit ).

λ = h / MV, M = h / λV
λ = 3.6 A⁰ = = 3.6 × 10⁻¹⁰ m¹⁰ m m
h = 6.626 × 10 ⁻¹⁰ m³⁴ J.s
V = 3 × 10⁸ m/s m/s
M = ( 6.626 × 10 ⁻¹⁰ m³⁴ ) / [ ( 3.6 × 10⁻¹⁰ m¹⁰ m ) × ( 3 × 10⁸ m/s)]
= 6. 135 × 10⁻¹⁰ m³³ kg
