CT AND VT SIZING CALCULATION
1 INTRODUCTION
Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) intends to extend the “ARAR Power Plant” by adding two
simple Cycle indoor Gas Turbines Generator (GTG # 9 & 10) including their Generator Step
up Transformers (GSUT) to meet the future load demand and to support the existing
generation capability at Power Plant site.
2 SITE CONDITION
The existing ARAR power plant is located on the main ARAR Al-Jouf highway, approximate
10 km south-east of ARAR city.
Climatic conditions are reported in the “Basic Design Data” Doc. N. 4400002450-3DR-
40000.
3 REFERENCE
Various system and equipment data of “ARAR Power Plant” are generated during the
engineering stage of this project. Following list indicates the major input data used to model
the power system network.
Every incongruence between documents shall be notified by Vendor and approved by
SADELMI Power.
All electrical equipment and electrical system design will be in accordance with the following
internationally standards and codes in their latest edition:
IEC-60044 - Instrument Transformers.
IEC-60185 - Current Transformers.
IEC-60186 – Voltage Transformers.
ANSI/IEE C57.13 – Requirements for Instrument Transformers.
5 SCOPE OF WORK
The purpose of this calculation is to size the Instrument Transformer i.e. Current
Transformer (CT) and Voltage Transformer (VT) for GSUT, UAT, GCB and 4.16kV
Switchgear as listed below:
a) 132/13.8kV two winding Generator Step up Transformer (GSUT) 09BAT01 &
10BAT01.

CT AND VT SIZING CALCULATION
6 OBJECTIVE
The calculation is prepared to determine the sizing of CT and VT required for protection &
metering of GSUT, GCB & 4.16kV SWGR for this project:
Burden and knee point voltage of protective CT cores to meet the protective relay
requirement without saturation by maximum through fault current when fault
occurs at any point of the distribution system.
Minimum required burden of VT cores for VT secondary connected load and
voltage drop by VT secondary lead cable.
7 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
There are two number of SIEMENS make Gas turbine generator. The electrical power is
generated at 60Hz, 13.8 kV voltage level and it is connected to 132KV GIS switching
substation through two individual 132/13.8 kV Generator step-up transformers by the 132kV
cables. The auxiliary power of unit load is fed through 13.8/4.16/4.16 kV Unit Auxiliary
transformers (UAT’s). The medium voltage level distribution is 4.16 kV. The Low voltage
distribution level is 480 V, 3-phase.
a) Make and type of protective relays considered for selection for each system.
b) All CT’s internal resistance (RCT) are assumed to be 3 ohms per 1000 turns.
c) Length of cable lead is assumed based on preliminary layout drawings of various
buildings.
d) 13.8/132kV, YNd11 GSU HV Winding Transformer Protection CTs is located at
the Transformer bushing.
e) 13.8/132kV, YNd11 GSU LV Winding Transformer Protection CTs is located at
Generator line side and IPBD of UAT HV side.
f) 13.8/4.16/4.16kV Dyn1yn1 UAT HV & LV-N protection CTs are located at IPBD
and 4.16 kV Switchgear Incomer.
g) All the CT & VT sizing calculations are carried out based on the IEC 60044-1 &
60044-2.
h) Control cable resistance is considered 5.9 Ω / km for 4 sq.mm Cu cable for CT
and VT Circuits.

CT AND VT SIZING CALCULATION
A. METHODOLOGY
Following steps are performed for sizing of Current Transformer: -
a) CT Ratio of the Current Transformer will be selected based on primary rated
current of the respective feeder to which it is connected for outgoing feeders. This
shall be further rounded off to standard rating or the nearest standard rating per
IEC 60044 Part-1. All CT Secondary shall be rated for 1 Amp.
b) CT Accuracy Limit Factor (ALF) for Protection CT is considered as 20.
c) VA Burden shall be calculated by arithmetical sum of VA burdens of the devices
connected to the current transformer secondary plus I2R burden of the secondary
CT cable.
d) Transformer (through) Fault Current (ISSC) for Transformer CT sizing is
calculated by below formula {[(MVA)/%Z] / [(1.732 x kV)]} x (1/CT Ratio)
e) Through Fault current for motor feeders considered as Maximum Starting current
which is 6 times rated current.
f) VK specification for Class PX Current Transformers:
As per Relay Manual Knee Point Voltage (VK) required is calculated by formula:
VK ≥ Ktd x Issc max(ext.fault) x (RCT + R’b) x Isn /(1.3*Ipn)
Where,
VK=Minimum CT knee point voltage
Ktd = Transient dimensioning factor.
Issc max(ext.fault) = Maximum Symmetrical Short Circuit Current
RCT = CT Internal Resistance
R’b = Connected resistive burden
Isn = CT Secondary current
As per Relay Manual Knee Point Voltage (VK) required is calculated by formula:
VK ≥ 2 x Vs
Where,
Vs = If X (Rct + Rm) / n
If = Maximum through fault current in primary amps
RCT = CT Internal Resistance
Rm = Resistance of the secondary circuit in ohms.
n = CT ratio
B. ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA
The Current Transformer selected shall be such that their parameters are well within the
required value/limits indicated in CT Sizing calculation.
