(5 mins)

The polynomial equation is a mathematical statement that two

algebraic expressions are equal.

However, to have a more complete definition of polynomial function, we

consider the following definitions

 A polynomial of degree n in x is an algebraic expression

consisting of the terms with non-negative powers of x. It general
form is

a n x + a n−1 x n−1+ a n−2 x n−2+ ….. a 2 x + a 1 x +

n 2

a 0 n is non-negative integer, the coefficients a n , + a n−1 , a n−2,

Where
a 2 , a1 , a0 are constants and x is a variable.

 An algebraic equation is a mathematical statement stating that 2

algebraic expressions are equal.
Therefore, we can define polynomial equation as a mathematical
statement consisting of terms and non-negative powers of x. Its general
form is

a n x n + a n−1 x n−1+ a n−2 x n−2+ ….. a 2 x 2+ a 1 x + a 0=0

Where n is non-negative integer, the coefficients a n , a n−1 , a n−2,a 2 , a1 , a0
are real numbers and a n ≠ 0 and x is a variable.

EXPLAIN (Teaching To further illustrate, observe the following examples.

3. x+ 4 x 3−2 x2 =0
5 3 4
4. 3 x + 2 x−x +7 x +1=0
5. 5 x +3=0

Now, let us observe Non-Polynomial Equations

1. ax +xy −3=0
3
2. x +2 x
3. 2 x6 +3 x−2=4
1
4. 5 x+ =0
x
2/ 3
5. 6 x =3
6. √ x+ 2 x=0
Aside from knowing how to identify if an equation is a polynomial or not, we
can
also classify its degree. The degree of a polynomial equation is the same as
the
degree of the term with the highest degree in the polynomial

There are times, polynomial equations are not express in general form and it is
important that we know how to write and show it in that way, so we could
easily
identity the degree of polynomial, and the degree of each terms.

Note: The general form of polynomial equation is written in decreasing degree

or decreasing exponent of each term.
Example:
Polynomial Equation
1. x +4 x 3−2 x 2+ 2=0 to rewrite it in general form, the result is
3 2
4 x −2 x + x+ 2=0 as you can see the degree, or the exponent of the
variable x is in decreasing order.
Degree of Polynomial: 3

2. 2 d 2−1=d the general form is 2 d 2−d−1=0

Degree of Polynomial: 2

Now, let us try to fill in the table below, supply the standard form, the degree,
the leading coefficient, leading term and the classification of the degree of
polynomial equation.
