Tutorial Sheet_CE 6040 Finite Element Analysis

Q. No. 1. Using Finite Element Technique, determine displacement at the free end in the cantilever as
shown:

Q. No. 2. Determine nodal displacement and support reaction of the cantilever beam as shown:

Q. No. 3. A thin steel plate of uniform thickness (1"), Young’s modulus of elasticity (30𝑥106 𝑝𝑠𝑖) and
weight density (0.2836 𝑙𝑏⁄𝑖𝑛3 ). In addition to its self weight, the plate is subjected to a point
load of (100𝑙𝑏) at its mid point. Model the plate with two finite elements, and determine the
reaction at the support. Use elimination approach to solve displacement vector.

Q. No. 4. Consider the bar as shown in the figure. An axial force of (200𝑘𝑁) is applied at node 2.
Determine
(a) Nodal displacements
(b) Stress in each material
(c) Reaction forces

Q. No. 5. Find displacement at node 2, and stresses in both the materials due to applied force of
(400𝑘𝑁) and a temperature rise of 30° 𝐶.

Q. No. 6. For the two-bar truss, determine the displacement of node 1 and stress in element 1-3.
Q. No. 7. For the pin-jointed configuration, determine the global stiffness matrix.

Q. No. 8. For a three-bar truss, determine the nodal displacements and the stress in each member.
Determine nodal displacements, stresses in each member and support reactions. Take E as
200𝐺𝑃𝑎.

Q. No. 9. Determine member forces and stresses in each element.

Q. No. 10. For a spring system shown in Fig. 1; k1 = 200 N/mm, k2 = 150 N/mm, k3 = 150 N/mm, k4 =
175 N/mm, F1 = 300 N, F2 = 200 N, U1 = U4 = 0

Obtain: (a) the global stiffness matrix

(b) the displacement of nodes 2 and 3
(c) the reaction forces at nodes 1 and 4.
