ENGR101 Assignment 4 - Engineering Sketching - 2023
ENGR101 Assignment 4 - Engineering Sketching - 2023
Imagine that you, a clever engineer at UC, are part of the team developing the prototypes for this
new technology. Your colleague sends you a photo of a part from the latest monocopter which they
need to be made from Aluminium. Unfortunately, you don’t have a CAD package on your laptop, so
the most efficient way to get this part made is for you to create an engineering drawing of it to send
to a friend who has an impressive workshop in their garage where they can make it. For this
assignment you are required to create an engineering drawing of the motor mounting plate, as seen
in Figure 2. All you have access to is the image of the part in Figure 2 with a few dimensions on it
and the information on the following page.
ENGR101 2023 - Assignment 4: Engineering Sketching Pg 2 of 4
Task information:
o You are required to produce a technical engineering drawing of the motor mounting plate
which includes three well-proportioned and labelled views in third angle orthographic
(Front, Side and Top views), as well as, an isometric sketch of the part on the same sheet.
o It is important that your orthographic views contain complete and unambiguous information
(shape, hidden detail and dimensions) so that the part can be modelled accurately.
o Figure 2 has some basic dimensions from which you are required to determine (make
estimates of) the other dimensions to form “well proportioned” drawings. The part can be
fully described using dimensions of whole numbers.
o Your isometric view should clearly display the shape of the part.
o The drawings are to be made at 1:1 scale on one side of A3 paper.
o Include a fully detailed title block with all relevant information. Plan the layout of your
drawing to ensure all views fit on the sheet.
o You must create your drawing by hand with pencil only, no ink pen. You cannot create the
drawing with a CAD package and print your submission.
o When creating the orthographic views, you can use a ruler and compass.
o When drawing the isometric view, you MUST NOT use a ruler. It is intended to test the
freehand sketching techniques you learned in this course and must be drawn in pencil
without the use of a straight edge. Use light weight lines when constructing your isometric
view and do not erase these, such that the marker can see how you constructed the drawing.

Hand-in instructions
The following steps should be followed to submit your assignment:
• Take a photo of your finished drawing with your phone camera or equivalent
• Save your photo in .pdf format (assistance with this will be found under ‘Assignment
4’ section in the “Aromatawai | Assessment” section on LEARN)
• Check to see that your image is of suitable clarity and size (see LEARN page for
examples)
• Change the file name to (Yourname)_Assignment4.pdf
• Submit via the LEARN Assignment 4 submission link before 3:00pm on Friday the 26th
of May.
Tip: don’t leave this until the last 5 minutes to avoid ‘digital traffic’ and risk missing
the deadline.
Keep your original drawing as a real world back up of your work!
You are required to submit a clear photo of your work so that the marker can see what you
have created and grade your submission fairly. Your file must:
• be in .pdf format in order for it to be marked
• be larger than 500KB to be off sufficient detail
• clearly show your work.
Refer to the Assignment 4 section on LEARN for assistance with saving a .pdf file and
guidelines for image clarity.
