AZ-140: Configuring and Operating Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop

Instructor Guide
AZ-140: Configuring and Operating Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop

Purpose
This document is for Microsoft Certified Trainers preparing to teach the AZ-140: Configuring and
Operating Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop course. This course is designed for students who are
planning to take the associated certification exam, or students who are performing Azure Virtual
Desktop administrator tasks in their day-to-day job.

Azure Virtual Desktop administrator role definition

The certification exam and the courseware are based on the Azure Virtual Desktop administrator
role. When students ask why some areas are being covered and other areas are not, refer them
to this role definition. Azure Virtual Desktop administrators activities include the following:

• Plan, deploy, package, update, and maintain the Azure Virtual Desktop infrastructure.

• Deliver applications on Azure Virtual Desktop that are optimized to run in multi-session
virtual environments.

• Serve as part of a larger team dedicated to cloud-based management and security of

hybrid environments as part of an end-to-end infrastructure.

• Work in conjunction with Azure Administrators, Azure Solutions Architects, and Microsoft
365 Administrators.

Audience
Students of this course should have experience in Azure technologies, including
virtualization, networking, identity, storage, backups, resilience, and disaster recovery.
They should understand on-premises virtual desktop infrastructure technologies as they
relate to migrating to Azure Virtual Desktop.

These professionals use the Azure portal and Azure Resource Manager (ARM) templates
to accomplish many of their tasks. They might use PowerShell and Azure Command-Line
Interface (CLI) for more efficient automation.

Prerequisites
Successful Azure Virtual Desktop administrators start this role with experience on
operating systems, virtualization, and cloud infrastructure.

This knowledge includes:

• Understanding of on-premises virtualization technologies, including: VMs, virtual

networking, and virtual hard disks.

• Understanding of network configuration, including TCP/IP, Domain Name System

(DNS), virtual private networks (VPNs), firewalls, and encryption technologies.

• Understanding of Active Directory and Azure Active directory concepts, including

users, groups, role-based accessed control.
• Understanding of resilience and disaster recovery, including backup and restore
operations.

Certification Exam
Certification exams measure your ability to accomplish certain technical tasks for a job role. The
study areas are based on the Job Task Analysis that was conducted for the role in December
2020.
Each study area has a percentage indicating the relative weight of the area on the exam. The
higher the percentage, the more questions you are likely to see in that area.

Study Area Percentages

Plan an Azure Virtual Desktop implementation 10-15%

Implement an Azure Virtual Desktop infrastructure 25-30%

Manage access and security 10-15%

Manage user environments and apps 20-25%

Study Area Percentages

Monitor and maintain an Azure Virtual Desktop infrastructure 20-25%

Candidates should have a minimum of 12 months of hands-on experience administering Azure

and have a strong understanding of core Azure services, Azure workloads, security, and
governance.

Preparing to Teach
The content for your course is organized into Modules, Lessons, and Topics. The course content
is mapped closely to the objectives outlined in AZ-140: Configuring and Operating Azure Virtual
Desktop on Microsoft Azure page.

There are five modules.

Module 00 – Welcome
Module 01 – Plan an Azure Virtual Desktop implementation
Module 02 – Implement an Azure Virtual Desktop infrastructure
Module 03 – Manage access and security
Module 04 – Manage user environments and apps
Module 05 – Monitor and maintain an Azure Virtual Desktop infrastructure

This is a suggested order. You have a lot of flexibility in how you use the content to create the
best learning experience for your students, and in what order. Always ensure you are covering
the content most applicable to your audience.

Also, keep in mind that 65-80% of the potential exam topics fall under Implement an Azure
Virtual Desktop infrastructure, Manage user environments and apps, and Monitor and maintain
an Azure Virtual Desktop infrastructure, and thus 65-80% course topics reside in Modules 02, 04,
and 05.

Because this is a new course, here is no Change Log for this delivery.

PowerPoint Slides
Each module has a PowerPoint deck. Each course topic has a PowerPoint slide.

The Module 00 PowerPoint provides a course overview, including a suggested schedule.

Azure Subscriptions
To complete the labs and any additional demonstration exercises in this course, students will
need an Azure Subscription. The current recommended way to give students access to Azure is
by requesting Microsoft Learning Azure Passes.
You can request Microsoft Learning Azure Passes for yourself and your students. Ensure that you
request these passes at least two weeks before the class starts. After receiving the passes each
student will need to activate their pass.

The Azure Pass effectively functions in the same way as the publicly available Microsoft Azure
Trial Subscription. This means there are limitations on what you can do with the pass.

Labs
Labs are provided for Modules 02, 04, and 05. The lab instructions are in the AZ-600 Microsoft
Learning GitHub repository. Supplemental files, such as scripts and templates, are also provided.
To complete the labs, you will need:

• An internet connection to the Azure portal.

• An Azure subscription.
Hosted machines may be available for an additional charge.
If you have lab feedback, create an Issue on the lab GitHub repository.

Portal, Cloud Shell, PowerShell, and the CLI

The lab instructions are written to use the Cloud Shell. The Cloud Shell automatically connects to
Azure and provides access to PowerShell and the CLI.
If you would rather have students use PowerShell or the CLI locally, you can use these links.

• Install Azure PowerShell on Windows with PowerShellGet

• Install Azure CLI on Windows

Module 01, Lesson 04, Azure Virtual Desktop PowerShell, provides an overview of the PowerShell
modules that are used in Azure Virtual Desktop. Most of the labs in this course use the tools
common Azure administrator tools: Azure portal, Azure PowerShell, Cloud Shell, and ARM
templates.

Course Review Questions

Review questions are provided throughout the course to check the student’s knowledge. You can
use these review questions in several ways:

• Have the student’s pre-test before the course starts and then at the end to see what they
have learned.
• As a group, go through the questions before moving on to another section.
• Sprinkle the questions into the content as you cover the related material.

Note: The review questions are not at the level of the certification exam. You may wish to
supplement with questions of your own choosing.

Microsoft Learn - Additional Study Resources

At the end of each module is a slide with applicable Microsoft Learn modules. These modules can
be used as additional study opportunities.
