LINEAR PROGRAMMING PROBLEMS

Q.No.1 A manufacturer produces two types of products A and B. Product of type A requires 4 hours of
molding and 2 hours of polishing whereas type B requires 2 hours of molding and 5 hours of
polishing. The maximum number of hours available per week on molding and polishing
machines are 80 hours and 180 hours respectively. Profit earns per unit on a product of type A is
$3 and per unit product of type B is $4. Formulate linear programming model and find solution
using simplex method to determine production volume for each type of product A & B so that
the weekly profit is maximized.

Q.No.2 TOYCO assembles three types of toys-trains, trucks, and cars-using three operations. The daily
limits on the available times for the three operations are 430,460, and 420 minutes, respectively,
and the revenues per unit of toy train, truck, and car are $3, $2, and $5, respectively. The
assembly times per train at the three operations are 1, 3, and 1 minutes, respectively. The
corresponding times per truck and per car are (2, 0, 2) and (1, 2, 0) minutes (a zero time
indicates that the operation is not used). Determine the production volume for each product so
that the total profit is maximized?

Q.No.3 Suppose TOYCO is studying the possibility of introducing a fourth toy: fire trucks. The
assembly does not make use of operation 1. Its unit assembly times on operation 2 and 3 are 1
and 3 minutes respectively and profit per unit is $4. Would you advice a company to introduce
the new product?

Q.No.4 A nutrition scheme for babies is proposed by a committee of doctors. Babies can be given two
types of food (I & II) which are available in standard sized packets weighing 50 grams. The
costs per packet of these foods are $2 and $3 respectively. The vitamin availability In each type
of food per packet and the minimum vitamin requirement for each type of vitamin are given in
table.

Vitamin availability per packet

Minimum daily
Vitamin Food type I Food type II
required vitamins
1 1 1 6
2 7 1 14
Cost ($) 2 3

Develop linear programming model to determine the optimal combination of food types with the
minimum cost such that the minimum requirement of vitamin in each type is satisfied.

Q.No.5 A small petroleum company owns two refineries. Refinery 1 cost $20,000 per day to operate
and it can produce 400 barrels of high-grade oil, 300 barrels of medium-grade oil and 200
barrels of low-grade oil each day. Refinery 2 is newer and more modern and itcost $25,000 per
day to operate and it can produce 300 barrels of high-grade oil, 400 barrels of medium-grade oil
and 500 barrels of low-grade oil each day. The company has orders totaling 25000 barrels of
high-grade oil, 27000 barrels of medium-grade oil and 30000 barrels of low-grade oil. How
many days should it run each refinery to minimize the cost and still refine enough oil to meet its
orders?
