QUESTION 2:
A 12-m pole supports a horizontal cable CD and is held by a ball and socket at A and two cables BE and
BF. Knowing that the tension in cable CD is 14 kN and assuming that CD is parallel to the x-axis (𝝋 =
250 ), determine the tension in cables BE and BF and the reaction at A.
QUESTION 3:
The relay regulates voltage and current. Determine the force in the spring CD, which has a stiffness
of k 120 N m, so that it will allow the armature to make contact at A in figure (a) with a vertical
force of 0.4 N. Also, determine the force in the spring when the coil is energized and attracts the
armature to E, figure (b), thereby breaking contact at A.

QUESTION 6:
Determine the reactions and their direction angles at B and D when b = 120 mm.
QUESTION 7:
A 600-lb crate hangs from a cable that passes over a pulley B and is attached to a support at H. The 200-lb
boom AB is supported by a ball-and-socket joint at A and by two cables DE and DF. The center of gravity
of the boom is located at G. Determine (a) the tension in cables DE and DF, (b) the reaction at A.

QUESTION 10:
Suppose that you want to design the safety valve to open when the difference between the
pressure p in the circular pipe (diameter = 150 mm) and the atmospheric pressure is 10 MPa
(megapascals; a pascal is 1 𝑁/𝑚2). The spring is compressed 20 mm when the valve is closed.
What should the value of the spring constant be?
QUESTION 11:
The weight W1 = 1000 lb. Neglect the weight of the bar AB. The cable goes over a pulley at C.

QUESTION 12:
The vertical cable is attached at A. Determine the tension in the cable and the reactions at the
bearing B due to the force F = 10i-30j-10k (N).
QUESTION 13:
In the Ukraine-Russia war, a rocket launcher is supported by the hydraulic jack DE and the
bearings A and B. The bearings lie on the x axis and supports shafts parallel to the x axis. The
hydraulic cylinder DE exerts a force on the launcher that points along the line from D to E. The
coordinates of D are (7, 0, 7) ft, and the coordinates of E are (9, 6, 4) ft. The weight W = 30-kip
acts at (4.5, 5, 2) ft. What is the magnitude of the reaction on the launcher at E?
