SYLLABUS OF API 510 - Oct2022
SYLLABUS OF API 510 - Oct2022
STUDENTS QUALIFICATIONS
This course is applicable to all personnel working in the oil, gas and petrochemical industry, and who are
involved in the design, procurement, engineering construction, operation, maintenance and inspection of in-
service piping systems and related facilities with the following criteria:
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course focuses on learning to become familiar with the layout and contents of API 510. It forms a vital
preliminary stage that will ultimately help the students understand not only the content of API 510 but also its
cross-references to the other relevant API and ASME codes.
The main emphasis of this program is on promoting safety and maintaining optimal performance through the
use of inspectors specialized in pressure vessels systems. It provides the oil, gas and petrochemical industry
with the assurance that pressure vessels inspectors trained and certified under this internationally recognized
program have the required knowledge and experience for the job in the field. Course participants aspiring to
be certified by American Petroleum Institute will undergo a rigorous program to get them well versed with the
various code books and standards, including API Standards that cover inspection, repair, alteration and
rerating of in-service pressure vessels systems.
API 510 is divided into nine sections (sections 1 to 9, where section 9 is excluded), five annex (annex A to E,
where annex E is excluded), 2 figures and 2 tables. Even when taken together, these are not sufficient to
specify fully a methodology for the inspection, repair and rerating of pressure vessels systems. To accomplish
this, other information and guidance has to be drawn from the other codes included in your API document
package.

COURSE PURPOSE
Generally, this course is essential in pressure vessels inspector. The main aim of this course is to provide the
students to obtain the technical standards covered include the full API ‘body of knowledge’ for the examination
as follows:
1. API 510 Pressure Vessel Inspection Code: Maintenance Inspection, Rating, Repair, and Alteration
2. API RP 571 Damage Mechanisms Affecting Fixed Equipment in the Refining Industry
3. API RP 572 Inspection of Pressure Vessels
4. API RP 576 Inspection of Pressure-relieving Devices
5. API RP 577 Welding Processes, Inspection, and Metallurgy
6. API RP 578 Guidelines for a Material Verification Program for New and Existing Assets
7. ASME VIII DIV 1 Rules for Construction of Pressure Vessels
8. ASME V Non-destructive Examination
9. ASME IX Welding and Brazing Qualification, Welding Only
10. ASME PCC-2 Repair of Pressure Equipment and Piping
By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to understand the
content and application of API 510. inspection code that covers in-service
1 API 510 inspection, repair, alteration, and rerating activities for pressure vessels and
the pressure-relieving devices protecting the vessels.
By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to improve safety,
reliability, and minimize liability of fixed equipment by learning common
damage mechanisms in the refining and petrochemical industry as covered in
2 API RP 571 API RP 571. The roles of the engineer and inspector in identifying affected
materials and equipment, critical factors, appearance of damage, prevention
and mitigation, inspection and monitoring will be covered to introduce the
concepts of service-induced deterioration and failure modes.
By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to understand the
content and application of API RP 572. It includes a description of the various
types of pressure vessels and the standards for their construction and
3 API RP 572 maintenance. Also includes reasons for inspection, causes of deterioration,
frequency and methods of inspection, methods of repair, and preparation of
records and reports and safe operation.
By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to understand the
content and application of API RP 576 that describes the inspection and repair
practices for automatic pressure-relieving devices commonly used in the oil
4 API RP 576 and petrochemical industries. This publication covers such automatic devices
as pressure-relief valves, pilot-operated pressure-relief valves, rupture disks,
and weight-loaded pressure vacuum vents.
By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to have
5 API RP 577 knowledge and expertise in the area of Welding Inspection and Metallurgy
based on the information contained in API RP 577.
By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to understand the
material and quality assurance system to verify that the nominal composition
6 API RP 578 of alloy components within the pressure envelope of a piping system is
consistent with the selected or specified construction materials to minimize the
potential for catastrophic release of toxic or hazardous liquids or vapors.

By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to understand the
7 ASME VIII DIV 1 content and application of ASME VIII DIV 1 that describes the Rules for
Construction of Pressure Vessels.
By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to understand
requirements and methods for nondestructive examination which are
8 ASME V referenced and required by other code Sections. It also includes
manufacturer's examination responsibilities, duties of authorized inspectors
and requirements for qualification of personnel, inspection and examination.
By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to understand
9 ASME IX rules relating to the qualification of welding and brazing procedures as required
by other Code Sections for component manufacture.
By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to understand
methods for repair of equipment, piping, pipelines, and associated ancillary
10 ASME PCC-2 equipment. It also includes relevant design, fabrication, examination, and
testing practices and may be temporary or permanent.
