Open Ended Lab (2019-CH-20)

The document summarizes the simulation of a compressor compressing a natural gas stream in Aspen HYSYS. It describes the steps taken: 1) creating the component list, 2) selecting the Peng-Robinson fluid package, 3) adding a compressor, 4) specifying the inlet and outlet streams, 5) setting the stream conditions, 6) adding the compositions, 7) viewing the compressor worksheet, 8) checking the compressor duty at 75% efficiency of 6.543 kW and 10% efficiency of 49.07 kW. It concludes that decreasing efficiency significantly increases the compressor duty.

Topic:
Compressor Simulation
Problem Statement:
A compressor is used to compress 100 kg/h of natural gas
consisting of 80 mol% methane, 10% ethane, 5% carbon dioxide and the remaining
nitrogen from 3 bars and 300C to 10 bars. Find the compressor duty (brake kW) for
75% and 10% efficiency.
Solution:
Step 1: Open the Aspen HYSYS and click on New tab.
Create a component list to add all the given components.

Step 2:
Add the Fluid Package that is peng robinson.

Step 3: Now go to the simulation environment. By simply clicking simulation and
choose compressor from here.
Incase if equipment not show after clicking on simulation then go to the view
option from ribbon bar and click on Model Palette.
Drag the compressor.

Step 4. Double click on the compressor and filled the required streams of
compressor.

Step 5: Now go to the worksheet tab.
Click on stream 1 and filled the required given conditions.

Step 6: Click on material stream 2 and filled the required conditions.

Step 7: Now add the compositions by clicking the composition in the worksheet of
both streams.

Step 8: The overall worksheet is:

Step 9: Click on the parameters in the design tab.
Check the compressor duty at 75% adiabatic efficiency that is 6.543 kW.
Figure 1.9-Compressor duty at 75%
Step 10: Check the compressor duty at 10% adiabatic efficiency that is 49.07 kW.
By clicking on the parameters in design tab.

Conclusion:
If I decrease the adiabatic efficiency from 75% to 10% a great surge
has been created. Less adiabatic efficiency gives the more duty.
