SECTION A QUESTION ONE a) Differentiate between modulus of elasticity and modulus of rigidity. (4 marks) b) A column 3 m high has a hollow circular cross section of external diameter 300 mm and carries an axial load of 5000 KN. If the stress in the column is limited to 150 N/mm? and the shortening of the column under load must not exceed 2 mm, calculate the maximum allowable internal diameter. Take E = 200,000 N/mm?, (8 marks) Figure Q1 below shows the cross-section of a reinforced concrete column of height 5 m. The column is reinforced by four steel bars each 20 mm in diameter and carries a load of 1000 KN. If Young’s modulus for steel is 200,000 N/mm? and that for concrete is 15,000 N/mm?, calculate: (i)_ the stress in the steel and in the concrete.
