ISO 14001 for Environmental Management

maintain legal compliances.

The ISO 14001 is applicable to any

body, company, firm, authority,
organisation, institution or

Revisions of ISO 14001
The first revision occurred in 2004, which
introduced minor changes to make the standard
more aligned with the ISO 9001 Quality Standard.
Afterwards, the revisions in 2009 also made minor
corrections without adding any new
requirements.

In 2015, ISO announced that it would make more

fundamental changes to the Standard. The ISO
14001:2015 has a High Level Structure that
includes core text, and common terms and
definitions that will help with future revisions of
the management system standards. The new
structure also helps the system integrate various
methodologies, such as the PDCA approach.
Implementing ISO 14001
Implementing the ISO 14001 standards will help your business prepare for the future,
and expand accordingly. Businesses, irrespective of their size and style of operation
have different needs when it comes to environmental management. Therefore,
businesses need to pick and choose the standards to ensure that the overall plan suits
their company profile.

● Collect customer, employee and supplier feedback to build a good system.
● Set up a team to implement the changes and to monitor the results.
● Map out roles, timelines, schedules and responsibilities so everyone knows what
their part is.
● Hand out training, certifications and incentives to encourage maximum staff
participation.
ISO 14001 Certification
● To receive the required ISO 14001
certification in India, the company must
establish an EMS of their own.
● This Environmental Management System
must adhere to the guidelines and principles
stated in the ISO 14001 standard.
● Once it has been established, it must be
implemented strictly and with complete
compliance.
● After six months of implementation, the
company may approach an authorised
certification agency, and ask for an audit.
● After auditing, if the certifying agency is
satisfied, they will grant the certificate.
● The certificate is usually valid for 3 years,
after which it must be renewed.
