CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Opening social media apps just right after they wake up became a habit for

some students. Especially, the younger generation grew up exposed with technology.

To check if there is any notification. Do you also use social media to get away from

your difficulties in the real world? Are you one of the billions of social media users

worldwide for connection and information sharing? On a personal level, social media

enables you to connect with distant friends and family, learn new things, explore your

interests, and be entertained. Social media addiction is when an individual is

uncontrollable in their use of social media. There are a lot of social media

applications. Such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and many more.

The use of social media has grown rapidly in recent years. The use of social

media websites is a widespread pastime among teenagers today, but they may also

be misused or overdone, which can result in social media addiction. The students

are greatly impacted, particularly during the epidemic years. Due to boredom, many

students started using social media until it became an addiction. Despite the fact that

children under 18 are prohibited,

There are people who experience stress from their problems, and because of

that, they use social media because here they feel as if their stress is disappearing

because of the fun they are experiencing. Many people believe that social media

relieves stress because of the things you can do there. You will have fun and won't

think about your problems. There are so many things you can do here, like scroll

through the newsfeed, and then there are pictures and videos that you can see or

watch. Also on social media, there are many people trying their best version of life

and sharing their stories, pictures, and videos that you can see.

Nowadays, students are found all around the world through social media. The

students of today are significantly changed by technology. While some students are

active on social media, when it comes to interacting with others in the classroom,

they become shy. Social media gives the impression that everyone's life is ideal

because of what is shared there. At that point, the FoMO (fear of missing something)

starts. These days, it may feel isolating if you can't keep up with the latest trends on

social media. The FoMO occurs, when you feel the pressure of living flawless life

that is displayed on social media.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Introduction
This chapter presents a selection of literature and studies that are

relevant to the current study. The researchers have gone through readings of

materials, which has a great significance during writing the thesis. Social media has

been a big part of today’s young generation’s life. Along with their growth is the

advancement and improvement of technologies.

Related Literature
It is true that social media could have a harmful impact on young

people, especially on their self-esteem. However, even while using social media

might be risky, there are still a lot of positive advantages to be gained from it. Social

media is already part of our society. Therefore, rather than discouraging students or

teenagers to use social media, we should teach them how to use it in a proper right

way for a variety of advantages. The social media encourages the creative thinking

and innovative thinking. Social media platforms have a lot of numerous contents.

Users can participate, interact, and express their creativity in a variety of ways.

These websites and apps can assist teens who enjoy taking pictures in honing their

craft and showcasing it.

Social media is indeed designed to be addicting for the users. The business

that operates the most popular social networking websites and app nowadays put a

lot of effort into enhancing and expanding the number of users they can attract to

their platform and optimizing the amount of time a user's they can attract to their

platform and optimizing the amount of the amount of time a user spends on it. The

more time user spends, the more advertisement they can run, and the more likely it

is that they will profit from their goods. For instance, the number of active users on

Facebook has increased to 2.989 billion monthly active users and placing the 1 st in

ranking of our world’s most ‘active’ social media platforms.

According to Juliya Smith, there are a lot of negative effects being addicted to

social media. Too much usage of social media can lead to mental health issues such

as (1.) anxiety disorders and depression. Spending a lot of time on social media may

have a negative impact on your mood and general wellbeing. (2.) Self-esteem,

people constantly strive to show the greatest versions of themselves on social

media, whether it's in terms of lifestyle, status, jobs, or physical appearance. (3.)

Irregular sleep patterns, even when you are asleep and awaken in the middle of the

night, you want to check your social media accounts to see if there have been any

updates. This could disrupt your sleep time, leaving you foggy, unproductive, and

drained for the following day (Juliya Smith, 2022). The excessive use of Facebook

and WhatsApp also reduces people's social interactions socially engaged but not

participating in social events. Investing excessive time alone in a virtual setting

without. Many issues in society are brought about through social interaction. To

recognize and address the issue of social media addiction, researchers have used a

range of approaches in the literature. Like any other sort of addiction, social media

addiction is influenced by a person's lifestyle and health behaviors in addition to

social and cultural factors. This sort of addiction has been identified as a behavioral

addiction that primarily results from issues in personal and social relationships. To

lessen the severity of addiction, a number of therapies and methods have been

suggested.

It was advice by De Angelis, it is very important that parents or guardians of

students should pay attention to the symptoms of these mental health disorders and

take note of their child is spending too much time on their screen or start making lies

about their use of internet.

Related Studies
Social media platforms that are known for enabling users to connect online

despite difficulties like distance or other constraints. According to recent data, social

networking websites have grown in popularity among teenagers or students as a

result of the rigorous COVID-19 pandemic response regulations put in place by

several nations, such as social isolation, "lockdowns," and quarantine procedures.

Social media is becoming an integral aspect of daily life, particularly for children and

teenagers, in this new environment.

Aaron Cooper, has found that social media use by teens has a negative effect

on their lives. Research has found that women who wanted to change some aspects

of their appearance reported being in a more negative mood after viewing Facebook

compared to women exposed to a website without appearance-related content.

Upward comparison is a common behavior among peer-conscious teenagers, and

those who spend greater amounts of time on social media are more likely to make

upward comparisons than downward comparisons. Parents can help mitigate the

negative effects of upward comparison by talking to their children about how people

curate their online image to look good (Aaron Cooper, 2023).

Addicts to social media were 1.6 times more likely than non addicts to have

psychological alterations. According to Aslan, Hazal Rümeysa and Tolan, Özlem

Çakmak Social media addiction was found to be negatively correlated with

psychological well-being, and there was a significant association between social

appearance anxiety, automatic thinking, and social media addiction. The

investigation came to the conclusion that social anxiety and automatic thoughts

significantly predicted social media addiction, although psychological well-being did

not significantly contribute to the model. In light of the pertinent literature, findings

were discussed.

According to sociologist research, there is a destructive relationship between

social media use and academic performance (Rosen et. al 2013) looked into the

behavior and study environment of 263 students from various educational levels,

such as middle school, high school and university. Students were observed 15

minutes, and their on-task and off-task conduct was conducting every minute.

Students become distracted in less than 6 minutes on average before turning to

technology distraction like social media and texting. Junco (2012) investigated the

relationship between Facebook use and academic achievement by polling 1839

college students about their Facebook usage and compared it to their grades. In

comparison to other activities such as studying or attending classes, it appears that

social media provides students with immediate enjoyment.

In several studies, teenage users who spend the most time on social media

were shown to have a substantially higher rate reported depression than those who

spent least time. As claimed by Sayantani Basu and Sudheer C.V (2020), Due to

social media's explosive expansion, a significant segment of society is now

concerned about social media addiction. Conflict, mood swings and behavioral

changes are just a few of the indicators that someone is a social media addict. As

first discovered by Kimberly S. Young, the addictive use of internet as distinct and

psychological disorder, utilizing comprehensive case studies of internet users.

According to researched by Young and others researchers, internet and adversely

affected user’s lives in a variety of ways. Life becomes unmanageable for the online

users, yet despite these problems, the addicts cannot give up the internet.

Theoretical Framework

Social influence theory, by Herbert Kelman surrounded by presents a framework for

understanding how people get influenced by people around them. This particular

type of influence happens once a person begins accepting the attitudes, values, or

behaviors of another person or group as correct or valid. The content that other

users share on social media makes it look as though their lives are completely ideal,

which can impact the users. but different to how they live their lives. On social media,

people frequently post their best selves, which puts pressure on one another. It can

lead to self-comparison and stressed out the user.

Self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan 2000) might offer additional understanding of

various aspects that could influence both social media use and mental health. The

power of a person to shape other people's opinions in a social online community is

referred to as social influence in marketing. For example, according to self-

determination theory, people who are less linked to others use social media more

frequently (Lin, 2016; Sheldon et al., 2011) and that this may help them meet their

demands for relatedness. In this theory, the reason why some users are addicted to

social media is because they seek for validations and affirmations.

According to this media dependency theory by Sandra Ball-Rokeach and Melvin

DeFleur, people use the media for lots of purposes. A few of them include par

asocial relationships, information, and entertainment purposes. According to the

dependency theory, media will become even more important to an individual as they

become more dependent on it to meet their needs.

validation that results in addictive behavior can be started by the expectation of

receiving favorable comments or attention. Social media can be used for gratitude

and as a way escape from reality. Social media offers an instantly accessible and

entertaining platform for people to entertain themselves during the time when they

are feeling bored or looking for a distraction.

Social media platforms frequently promote people's lives' high points, giving

the impression that others are missing out on amazing occasions. People may

obsessively check their social media accounts out of a fear of missing out on social

events, updates, or trends.

People might use social media as an opportunity to look for validation and

approval from others. The affirmation one receives from likes, comments, and

followers can increase self-esteem and promote a feeling of social acceptance. As

individuals constantly look for external affirmation, the habit of seeking validation can

become addictive to the users.

The mental, emotional, and social health of people can be negatively

impacted by social media addiction in lots of ways. Use of social media in excess

might increase anxiety, stress and depressive symptoms. Social media can reduce

productivity, attention span, and concentration. It may be challenging to concentrate

on a task or engage in activities due to the constant notifications. In essence, social

media addiction may cause mental health problems.

social media's growth started far larger than they had anticipated. Just One (1)

section was given the conducted survey. What's more, if the respondents will be

compiled from the other sections or the whole Camarines Norte school? The findings

of this study to the conducted survey from students who continued to use social

media heavily despite being warned about its negative effects. The students

frequently utilize social media to avoid stress and to escape it while they are dealing

with difficulties in their daily lives. They express themselves through social media

since it allows them to build their ideal selves and increase their self-confidence.

The research revealed results that were different from the hypothesis.

Because the questionnaire respondents who admitted having experienced a social

media addiction are active and performing well in their academic endeavors, despite

their social media addiction, it did not have a significant detrimental impact on them.

Social media is beneficial when used properly, but it may be harmful if a
person develops an addiction to it. To prevent social media addiction, turn off
personal phones during school hours, meals, and engaging in leisure activities. You
should also change the settings on each social media app, set aside a specific
amount of time each day for social media, and establish a timer to help you stay on
task. Avoid using social media when you're feeling down and instead engage in an
activity that will make you feel better, such as talking to a friend, going for a walk, or
listening to music. Instead of using social media, spend time with family and friends.
These activities can serve as a good distraction from the false world you have
created for yourself.
