EXPERIMENT NO. 1 Disturb Soil Sample, Labelling and Storage

This document outlines the procedure for collecting disturbed soil samples, including the purpose, equipment, and steps. The procedure involves clearing vegetation from the sample area, digging holes to depths of 0.5m and 1m, collecting soil samples in cellophane bags, labeling the samples, and storing them properly for testing and identification. Samples of light and dark soil were collected from two locations in Bohol, Philippines at both depths. Proper sampling and storage of disturbed soil is important for determining soil properties and structure through testing.

EXPERIMENT NO. 1
TITLE: DISTURBED SOIL SAMPLING, LABELLING AND STORAGE

I. PURPOSE OF THE EXPERIMENT

a. To be able to obtain a disturbed soil sample.
b. To properly store the soil sample.
c. To properly label the soil sample for easy identification.
d. To be able to preserve a disturbed soil sample for testing.
II. APPARATUS/EQUIPMENT USED
a. Shovel
b. Digging Bar/Soil Auger
c. Clear Cellophane/Moisture Tight containers
d. Others (Please specify)
III. PROCEDURE
i. Soil Sampling (Dark Soil Sample)
a. Clear the area of grass and vegetation where the soil sample is to be obtained.
With the use of a digging bar (the use of Soil Auger is optional depending on
the availability), dig/bore hole until the desired depth is reached which is 0.5
meter below the ground surface. Record the depth of the soil sample.

b. Get soil sample. Place the soil sample in a clear cellophane and tie it to secure
the sample.
c. Fill in the needed data for the soil sample label. Place the soil sample and its
label in another clear cellophane.
d. For the 1 meter depth, deepen the hole to 1 meter below the ground surface.

e. Repeat steps b and c to obtain another set/cellophane of sample for the 1 m

depth.

ii. Soil Sampling (Light Soil Sample)

a. Clear the area of grass and vegetation where the soil sample is to be
depending on the availability), dig/bore hole until the desired depth is reached
which is 0.5 meter below the ground surface. Record the depth of the soil sample.

b. Get soil sample. Place the soil sample in a clear cellophane and tie it to

secure the sample.

c. Fill in the needed data for the soil sample label. Place the soil sample and

its label in another clear cellophane.

d. For the 1 meter depth, deepen the hole to 1 meter below the ground
surface.
e. Repeat steps b and c to obtain another set/cellophane of sample for the 1 m
depth.

IV. RESULTS

The light soil was from Dasitam, Baclayon, Bohol, while the dark soil was

from Katipunan, Anda, Bohol. Each soil type has two sets of soil samples: one
was obtained from 0.5 meters below the ground surface and the other from 1
meter below the ground surface.

V. CONCLUSION
Geotechnical exploration and testing are critical in determining the
properties of soil. Disturbed soil is an important factor in soil testing as it depicts
most of the physical properties of the soil. The proper sample method will yield
more precise findings in determining soil properties and structure. After obtaining
a sample, its storage is just as critical as the sampling itself; thus, after labelling
the soil samples, the group stored them properly in the laboratory.
