INTRODUCTION INPATIENT OUTPATIENT TREATMENT

TREATMENT.
Introduction
As the field of addiction treatment continues to rely upon more evidence-based
intervention, clients can benefit from inpatient services, outpatient services, or a
combination of both

Immediate and long-term needs are considered in determining treatment options

from a variety of possible interventions.

The criminal justice system serves as a major source of referrals to substance use
treatment.

Understanding the options, choices, benefits, and challenges to both inpatient and
outpatient treatment is essential for clinicians.

Counselors need to be familiar with addiction rehabilitation treatment options,

sources, and referral choices in an effort to reduce recidivism and curb the
excessive impact of addiction.

The impact of substance addiction treatment is extensive. Costs, according to van

Wormer and Davis (2018), are astronomical, affecting individuals, families,
friends, community, and the workplace.

substance use and mental health–related issues

Summary

As clinicians, we are morally and ethically obligated to advocate for efficacious treatment that is
beneficial to client and society alike.

Monumental consequences due to addiction experienced by individual, family, and community

present almost incalculable costs to society.

New, evidence-based approaches are desperately needed. The medical community and
policymakers must advocate for alternatives to imprisonment, drug-policy reform, and increased
public awareness of this crisis in an effort to improve quality of life.
