Lesson Plan My Favourite Subject
Lesson Plan My Favourite Subject
Prior Learning: Children will have learnt the name of school subjects in Spanish in Lesson 3 of the year 3 All About School unit
Learning Sequence
Las asignaturas [School Subjects]: Introduce or recap the vocabulary of school subjects using the Lesson
Presentation. Hand out mini whiteboards and ask children, in pairs, to match the Spanish names of school
subjects to the correct illustrations - writing numbers and letters only, e.g. 1 = F. Ask volunteers to give their
answers, encouraging them to say the numbers and letters in Spanish if they can. Correct answers are revealed
one by one on a click. Each time, play the sound for children to listen to the words and get them to repeat.
Quiz: Use the Lesson Presentation to further reinforce the vocabulary of subjects. Children can write their
responses on paper/whiteboards, or individuals can be asked and give an answer. Answers are revealed on a
click. Children listen and repeat to practise the pronunciation. Can they name school subjects?
¿Qué asignatura te gusta más? [Which Subject Do You Like Most?]: Continue with the Lesson Presentation
to introduce the question ¿Qué asignatura te gusta más? with the answer Me gusta/gustan más (+ subject)
[I prefer (+ subject)/I like (+ subject) best]. Go through a few examples and draw attention to the fact that with
subjects that are plural, e.g. las ciencias, they will need to use ‘me gustan’ instead of ‘me gusta’. Alternatively,
ask if anyone can remember and explain the difference between ‘me gusta’ and ‘me gustan’.
Ask and Answer Questions: Give out a set of differentiated School Subjects Cards per pair and use the Lesson
Presentation to show the key question and two answer starters. In pairs children take turns to choose two
subjects and ask their partner which they prefer; their partner then answers the question. Can they say which of
two subjects they like best using ‘más’?
¿Cuál es tu asignatura preferida? [Which Is Your Favourite Subject?]: Using the Lesson Presentation, introduce
the key question ‘¿Cuál es tu asignatura preferida?’ and the answer, e.g. ‘Mi asignatura preferida es la historia’
[My favourite subject is history]. Practise with a few examples before asking them the question. Children take
it in turns to ask and answer the question with a partner. Can they say which is their favourite subject of all?
¡Tu turno! [Your Turn!]: Using the differentiated My Favourite Subject Activity Sheet, children demonstrate their
understanding with a reading/writing activity where they express their preference between two subjects. With
a partner, they then ask and answer the two key questions ‘¿Qué asignatura te gusta más?’ and ‘¿Cuál es tu
asignatura preferida?’ Can they express preferences about school subjects?
Language Notes:
• In this lesson, you may wish to point out that in Spanish, none of the subject names begin with a capital letter, whereas in English,
subjects that are languages do.
• In this lesson, the comparative adverb ‘más’ is introduced.
• *Preferido/preferida is an adjective. Please note that it is placed after the noun it describes and that it needs to agree with it in number
and gender - ‘asignatura’ in this lesson is feminine singular, hence the use of ‘preferida’.
Mi color preferido [my favourite colour] as color [colour] is masculine singular.
Mi fruta preferida [my favourite fruit] as fruta [fruit] is feminine singular.
