I. Context and Rationale

Tutoring is a process in which expert and trained people help and support

other people who are less skilled and have low level of knowledge (or expertise),

in an interactive, meaningful, and organized way. Usually, shy children learn

effectively through tutoring by sharing their thoughts with classmates. The history

of tutoring has undergone an evolution which can be traced back to Roman and

Greek ages. According to Mickelson (2003) as far as peer tutoring is concerned,

it is a teaching strategy where a group of students interact to help each other’s

learning by one student occupying the role of tutor and the other the role of tutee.

Usually, peer tutoring involves the linking of intelligent students with less-

intelligent ones.

As posited by researchers such as Austin (2008) as cited by Eisenkopf

(2010), peer tutoring has positive impacts on student learning, motivation, and

socialization. Peer tutoring was found effective in the development of creativity

and problem-solving skills of both tutors and tutees. In similar perspective from

Gordon (2009) added that due to its interactive nature, peer tutoring helps the

tutor in understanding the mental level of the tutees and concept about the topic.

Results are very successful if the tutor and tutees are engaged in collaborative

work and meaningful activities under planned and structured program.

However, peer tutoring programs are not free from hitches due to individual

differences of students. There are some limitations, which are mostly related to

the behavior of the students during classroom activities or management of

academic activities during peer tutoring programs. Therefore, it is necessary that

peer tutoring programs should be highly structured and planned and should be

conducted under strict supervision and in a controlled environment.

In addition, Jo and Almarzouqi (2006) stated that a peer in the form of

tutor may not always ensure good scaffolding and the reasons for this are the

lack of skills and experience of tutors, usually in a situation when the tutors are

young. Therefore, Lee et al., (2003) admit that students as tutors should be given

proper orientation about the tutoring activity.

The researchers in the field of education were trying to enhance the

learning outcomes of the students by introducing innovative approaches. In

Carrascal National High School particularly learners in Science, Technology and

Engineering (STE) Program in their English 7 subject, sixteen (16) out of thirty-six

(36) learners have difficulty in mastering a specific competency based on the

results of the Learning Activity Sheets (LAS) Week 4. The study was conducted

to improve the least learned competency in English 7 using Student Teams

Educational Mentoring (STEM) Program an online peer assisted learning

strategy. The researchers sought ways to provide needed intervention to aid the

learning difficulty of the learners identified as struggling in that specific learning

competency.

II. Action Research Questions

The purpose of this study is to improve the least learned competency in

English 7 using Student-Teams Educational Mentoring (STEM) Program.

Specifically, the study aims to answer the following questions:

1.What is the mean score of the learners before the implementation of Student

Teams Educational Mentoring (STEM) Program?

2.What is the mean score of the learners after the implementation of Student

Teams Educational Mentoring (STEM) Program?

3.Is there an increase in the mean scores of the learners before and after the

implementation of Student Teams Educational Mentoring (STEM) Program?

III. Proposed Innovation, Intervention, and Strategy

The identified learners were assessed by the teacher utilizing the existing

Learning Activity Sheets (LAS) Week 4 in English 7 Pre – test was then

administered which allowed the teacher to identify learners with low scores in that

specific learning competency. Intervention was then implemented to address the

learning difficulty.

Student Teams Educational Mentoring (STEM) Program was designed to

serve as learning intervention, it is a peer assisted learning strategy that will aid

learners needs and difficulty. The common peer tutoring models used in K – 12

were of different types, the researchers applied the Cross-Age Peer Tutoring

intervention that works by pairing students from different grades and ability levels

to work on an academic skill together. The older/higher ability student will be the

tutor; and the younger/lower ability student will be the tutee. The students work

together to practice a skill.

In identifying learners that will serve a peer tutor, learners from

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) 12 was selected as

tutors, to make sure that these learners were capable of teaching and assisting

their tutees they underwent screening and evaluation through their grades from

grade 11 to present. STEM 12 learners who obtained excellent grades

specifically in English subject were then considered part of the prospective tutors,

after that, character and behavioral evaluation was conducted through an

interview this is to make sure that the chosen peer tutors foster the following

characteristics: greater psychological well-being, social – emotional competence,

higher achievement, and greater productivity in terms of learning outcomes.

When the team of tutors were finalized and tutees were assigned, the

peer tutoring started using different online platforms by both tutor and tutee since

tutees were grade 7 learners of Science, Technology and Engineering (STE)

Program and under 18 years old, they were restricted to go outside to meet

physically by their tutor, the teaching and assisting was done remotely for the

duration of two (2) weeks the tutorial session was closely monitored to assess the

teams’ progress regularly and after the peer tutoring the post – test was then

administered to evaluate if there was an improvement in the learners’

assessment scores.

IV. Action Research Methods
a. Participants and/or other Sources of Data Information

The researcher used a purposive sampling technique. The

respondents identified were the sixteen (16) Grade 7 of Science, Technology

and Engineering students with low assessment results based on the learning

activity sheets (LAS) of Carrascal National High School, school year 2020-

2021.

b. Data Gathering Methods

Before officially gathering data for the study, the researcher will ask

permission from the office of the School Principal to conduct the study. After

obtaining the approval of the principal, the researcher will seek the consent of

the class adviser. When the permission will be granted, the researcher will get

the list of students for the school year 2021-2022 with their corresponding

profile. From this list of students, the researcher will select the possible

participants of the study based on the assessment scores obtained from the

learning activity sheets. The researcher will then inform the possible

participants about the study, with its purpose, and their role in the conduct of

the study. Informing the participants will be done through various means such

as calling or texting them with their smart phones and contacting them

through Facebook or Messenger. Once they will give their permission to

participate, the researcher will require them to sign the informed assent and

orient them of their rights as research participants. When all permissions are

secured, the researcher will conduct the study.

The main data used by the researcher were the scores of learners in

their LAS (Learner’s Activity Sheet) summative assessment and the scores

resulted after the intervention with the same activity in the LAS. During the

summative assessment monitoring, the least mastered competency was

identified. Scores in the activity were used as basis. The same activity was

administered after the intervention.

c. Data Analysis Plan

Descriptive statistics describes, summarizes, and characterizes the

characteristics of a sample being studied. The pretest–posttest design

involves obtaining a pretest measure of the outcome of interest prior to

administering some treatment, followed by a posttest on the same measure

after treatment occurs. Pretest–posttest designs are employed in both

experimental and quasi-experimental research and can be used with or

without control groups.
