Thrane & Thrane, New version H-1252B printer
There is a new type H1252B printer which requires programming for proper use in combination with an INM-C or
telex system (NBDP). Default the printer is programmed for the INM-C systems. If a new type of printer is to be
placed check the software version first.
Perform the self test and check the version number. If E1 = telex , if E2 = INM-C
Selftest is done by pressing first and fourth button on the printer while powering up. Keep them pressed until printer
starts printing the test page.
Reprogramming of the printer is done by connecting your laptop directly to the printer, use printer-cable, and
selecting the inmarsat.exe or telex.exe file which can be found on the installation cd-rom.
This cd-rom is normally delivered with the printer but can also be found on the Thrane e-support site and on the
RHNL network (Tt-123775 reva.zip).
I advise to download the software instead of using the cd-rom, we already encountered cd-roms which did not have
all the files and/or had corrupted files.

EXCITER ERROR 0 dB : may be a measurement problem due to additional equipment (if system is working
properly and bite test is with 50 ohms dummy on exciter output without any errors).
Check resistance between ships ground and GND of the bridgeterminal STR2000 ; should be +16kOhm.
Disconnect every DC supply by removing the small (auto) fuses, until error disappears.
Eventually disconnect battery to let error disappear from bite test.

NIT for BIOS
FUZZ for exit to DOS
PINK for BITE test
NOPA for Prevent/Allow TX Power (F5)

SOFT 2-0-3 E00.08 :

latest software version for our STR2000 system 2-0-3 E00.08.
With this version the locking up on DSC's shall disappear and the telex is full functional.
Boot 1529( version E00.06) is self extracting and bootable after that, it's for Disk On Chip systems.
The software DIS-2070 is not booting, so extract zip-file on a DOS 6.22 bootdisk(normally not necessary).
You can make a boot able diskette by typing "sys a:" at c:\> on a DOS 6.22 system.
Insert disk boot1529 in drive a:, exit to DOS with password "fuzz" change to drive a: and type "install".
Then update the system with DIS-2070( see below).
If you only want to update older 2-0-3(also 2-0-1) to E00.08 insert DIS-2070 (also for harddrive) and type at
the DOS prompt (after changing to drive a:) "update" .
The dformat command does clear up the whole Disk On Chip(on DIS-1529).
You can enter the BIOS with the password "nit", if necessary.
To get the Cyrillic version you must first install DIS-1378( with "install"), it's unfortunately no bootdisk
and only tested on Disk On Chip equipment, and then update with DIS-2070 as described above.
You can change to Cyrillic fonts in the telex editor (F8) with Ctrl-Shift on the right side, back to Latin
keys with the same buttons on the left side.

In the Safe to diskette word file, you'll find maybe helpful information how to safe important information
before a reinstallation of the complete software.

OKI 280 new series 2007 :

Radio Holland BELGIUM - Antwerp TELECOM 49

I advise to download the software instead of using the cd-rom, we already encountered cd-roms which did not have
all the files and/or had corrupted files.

For RM2151 press « 07 » « 3 » and contains need to be « 2-1 ». RM2151 is equipment type 2 on address 3. If you
also have R2120 (duplex receiver) this will come on address and equipment type is 3 (« 07 » « 4 » contains 3-1)
In RM2150/RM2151 address has to correspond with address in RE2100, i.e. in RM2150 SP address is 2, in
RM2151 address is 3.
Addresses can be programmed at random as long as units have matching address. If any conflicts  error 21

COMMON FAULTS :
 Error 21 : something wrong with sp-bus or addresses, or 1 unit not switched ON
 Error 71/81 : usually caused by defective transistors BFW17 on exciter pcb causing low output
 Error 73/75 : filter board capacitors broken  tune problems on some bands  replace filter board.
 Error 71 or 78 and intermittent faults : Tx processor board may be faulty.
 Error 71 (on 250W) or error 81 (on 600W) : (low power) plenty problems with connection board on 600W
version, best to replace complete Tx unit.
 The correct way to adjust output of RE2100 is as follows : connect 50 ohm dummy to red connector (RF), go to
service program SP-05-0, with scope directly on red connector you should measure 3.5 Vtt after preesing
handset pressel. Can be adjusted on power pcb with R30 (aft side of RE2100)
 After each major repair on RE2100 TX calibration has to be done using SP-25, 3.5Vpp adjustment.
Should always be done, also after replacement of filterboard, PA, etc., else other probs may show up.
 Always use matching soft for RE2100 and TX
 Many intermittent errors are often caused by TX control pcb
 When replacing Tx-processor remember to insert jumper P03 if required and to change soft
 If duplex receiver is fitted, use frequency control by CH only, else Rx and Tx on the simplex frequency.
 SP-bus interrupt line should be 4.8 to 5.1V with negative pulsing, ; if 3.5V not OK ?
Anyway, be very carefull when plugging in new units because interrupt buffers may blow.
 Intermittent or no (when covers are closed) speaker output : loudspeaker magnet is blocking 1 relay  try to
cure by putting 1mm metal plate between speaker and audio pcb.

When the file is loaded, type « batch rmset », the file will be transferred to RM2150/51. After this the settings to
be set (sp-address, sel9, sel4, …).
Same for files RMFREQ and RMSTN.
Manual changes can be done in terminal mode.
 Set log printing ON, and on RM2151 « save to printer », else traffic is filling buffer and finally starts eating the
program which becomes corrupt then.
 If Philips GPS it can be that RM2151 locks up or position is scrolling over video. No solution, disconnect GPS.
 No DSC/TELEX reception and no modulation of transmitter : filter (modem) pcb faulty (early versions).
Reception can be checked by red LED flashing on rear of unit while scanning.

A common failure is connection module (13), circuit around Q1b and D4, D4 is shorted causing RF short to
ground. Board to be replaced, soldering difficult and tracks may be damaged.
For PA same as for T2130 except currents different : drivers 60mA, PA transistors 200mA.
After major replacement always calibrate with SP-25(see techn.manual)

SCANCOMM home
NOTAS SCANCOMM-KURSUS.....12/94
 Scancomm version 1.5 (12/94)
 ...F2 : REGAIN SCANNING: immediate regain scanning, f.e. to override a DSC- 5 minute-standbytime-after a
DSC-call, waiting for acknowledgement.
 PCP717 Modem is used in Skanti DSC, as well as in Skanti Telex, same hardware apart from RAM (DSC
small, TLX bigger)

Radio Holland BELGIUM - Antwerp TELECOM 60

 RTM986 is an adapted version of PCP717 hardware, to be fitted in PC, has no battery, does not use PC’s
battery ( to avoid overloading this battery, since it’s capacity is unknown), but has large capa 1mmF doing the
battery-job; PC switched off for about 2 weeks may result in lost memory (users info).
 SUBSCRIBER, means any station you can communicate with, = also coaststation.
 Message memory: - on FEC: will drop automatically oldest messages when memory full.
- on TLX: will stop communication when memory full.
 SETUP paperlength: put on zero = single paper feeder bv A4.
 SETUP graphics/logo: outlined: enkel omtrek van graphics = zuiniger in power en inkt bij het printen.
filled: volledige tekening = veel verbruik van power en inkt
 SETUP PCP: when programmed 1st time (selcall etc), info will be transferred to modem and stored there. On
second startup PCP SETUP will be locked, cannot be changed unless factory reset is made in modem.
 Abreviation: should be 4 letters given by authorities, but never given so make up your own. Abreviated ID is
part of answerback (ABCD), so: 123456789 ABCD X or 1234/5 ABCD X
 2 answerbacks possible: in subscriber definition to be set for standard/non standard
1)standard, autobuilt with ID and abreviation.
2) non standard answerback, f.e. if to be commissioned under different answerback for different stations such
as MARITEX=non standard answerback -to be made yourself (with carr.return/ figshift/ lettershift etc).
 Frequency shift 85Hz both sides= 170Hz= normal
 Radio interface (communication to the radio):
- extended: freqs, mode, DSC scanning, release keyboard for free use,...
- standard: f.e. freqs, not mode, (T-bus like Thrane-Thrane)
- none: no info to radio
 Retries: 9 + 1 (starting) gives 10 attempts, better 2 or zero attempts.
 Edit levels: protection against accidental override. Put to 1000 to access Skanti programmed subscribers. New
subscribers default level is zero. Put level to 1000, do changes, put to zero again.
 If necessary to protect setups: start up with SCANCOMM/R = setup is inaccessible Restart with scancomm/r
will unlock setup again.
 Scancomm/? or /H or /Help gives command options on screen.
 F12 or printscreen can be used to print screen info.
 TLX: F1= distress, not to ask for help, but for distress rescue operations, f.e. if you are leader in search and
rescue operations, FEC messages will be transmitted on distress freqs
 TLX: F2= manual: receiver checks first on Tx freq if the channel is free. Time between calls have to be
minimum 1 minute. No retry on manual.
 Dwell time may have to be put longer for CC with also morse on free channel signal. If not long enough and
scanning, free signal may not be detected.
 Diode on PCB flashes on normal operation, flashes fast during factory reset
 Hide/Recover subscribers: Hide: can be used to free subscr list from stations which are never used.
 Insert subscr: f.e. if new subscriber was defined on another PC, then use insert to copy this in the system on
board
 In accordance with ITU freq tables Scancomm uses as:
Tx freqs= coaststation Tx freq Rx freq= shipstation Tx freq
Freqs are seen from the point of the subscriber, so in subscr edit level the frequency asked will be the subscr
Rx freq = your Tx freq.
 ...F2: number= selcall, is necessary
 ...F3: answerback, not really necessary. OK if known correctly, will then be checked when making the link
 ...F1: country abbr.: use car license letter if known, if not use any related letter
 Slave delay: zero is best
 Rephasing allowed: best YES = restart after reception of 32 errors; Maritex will not use rephasing.
 Polling can be used to check f.e. CC mailbox for MSG’s
 Default: means your last entry. Look in helpfile for Skanti default value or use Scancomm back-up disc (3th
disc delivered with program)
 Reinstall Scancomm: (thuis) eerst oude scancomm directory en files deleten, maar ook Scancomm.dir file in
root (hidden file, attributes eerst te veranderen)
 Scancomm/J: for tests: mark/space/etc. Diode on PCB as mark and space indicator
 RTM pcb can be used with XT PC, or higher.
 FAULTS on older RTM pcb’s:
-”RTMboard has failed” => replace pcb!!
-bad operation of demodulator or keyboard blocked: only with Eprom version before 2.11. Version 2.11
(released 8/94) or 2.12 (12.94) have cured these errors.
 Cyrillic/Latin characters : « shift - F10 » OF « alt – F12 »

released before the 30th second).
Real alert
Press red switch 1, press red switch 2. Release both switches after + 5 minutes. Two real alerts are transmitted
(confirm reception at addressee & note the result on the installation report)
Test alert (same as real alert but received message has test-label):
Keep green test button pressed, press red switch, wait 1 min, unpress red switch and release green test button. A
test alert will be transmitted.
Installation/wire test: green = on
- keep green pressed (= green off),
- & switch on red alert 1 (= green quick blinking), switch off 1,
- & switch on red alert 2 (= green quick blinking), switch off 2,
- release green

PROBLEMS WITH THE GREEN TEST BUTTON : suddenly it is off and the light remains off.
1/ Defective LED inside the button ?
2/ Bad connection of I/O 1, I/O 2, I/O 3 or I/O 4 inside the break-out box ?
3/ Frequency calibration needed ?
You can create the problem if you do as follows:
1) Remove either the I/O 1 or I/O 2 from alert button 1, or the I/O 3 or I/O 4 wire for alert button 2, from the break-out box.
2) After 15 seconds the green light goes OFF.
3) Connect again either I/O 1, I/O 2 I/O 3, I/O 4 wire, the green light still remains OFF.
4) Under this condition, you are still able to send the test/alert message as normal.
5) If you press alert button 1 or 2 together with test button, green light will flash quickly.
6) Release both buttons, still the green light remains OFF.
7) If you press the other alert button (not the same as before) together with test button, green light will flash quickly.
8) After release of both buttons, the green light will go back to constantly ON.

If you followed point 5 and 6 you will reset the system, and the system will go back in normal mode (if all connections in the
break-out box is OK).
Alternatively you can also reset the system by turning it off, for more than 3 minutes

FREQUENCY CALIBRATION :
Calibration of the Mini-C: In some cases you need to make a calibration of the unit, if the transceiver is
unable to synchronize to the TDM channel (low or no Inmarsat signal). If the transceiver has been stored for 6
months or more, or other reasons, there could be a problem with the signal level.
Identification: You can check the signal level by the command “st –s”.
The Signal Strength (S) can vary from 0 to 5 where 5 is the best signal. You should have a reading above 2 to
ensure a proper communications link.
Action: You can start a calibration of the unit by the command
“ca e<enter>” (e = East, w = West, p = Pacific, i =Indian), when you are logged in at DISTB level.
So you need the DISTRIBUTOR PASSWORD first of all.
When a calibration is started, the transceiver searches for a NCS TDM starting with the ocean region specified by
the command argument. The calibration will not stop until a NCS TDM has been found. A successful calibration
could take several minutes (up to 45 minutes).

 Level indication on screen is calculated from AGC level in antenna, 2 bars = poor results, plenty
retransmissions

Radio Holland BELGIUM - Antwerp TELECOM 72

 Mobile number in newly installed system is a dummy number until programmed via terminal mode
 X400 is not supported
 Telex 5 or 7 bits, 5 bit format is 33% cheaper but not all characters will pass
 Special = special access code, provided by some LES, e.g. for medical advise, or e.g. 068 = customer support
 Immediate transmission: some LES taxes are cheaper in off-peak hours, can set up time of transmission into
these hours
 DNID = data network ID (data reporting), ENID = enhanced network ID (fleetnet), additional numbers to IMN
number, downloaded by sat.system if service has been paid for by owners
 ENID and DENID edit screens only informs you about eventually downloaded numbers by sat system, cannot
be edited. If numbers got lost for some reason, arrangement with LES to be made to download them again.
 If TT3020 has version V2.xx without built-in GPS, no problem to built in the GPS module, no other modification
to be done
 Do not use linktest for repairs as after 3 faulty link tests within 24 hours, Inmarsat will bar the MES from the
system; owners will have to contact Inmarsat to cancel barring, can take one day. (faulty linktest may be due
to faulty transmitter with output of 50W i.o. 25W which can make problems in satellite and thus disturb
communications for other users)
 If GPS position is INVALID  receiving all EGC’s for all areas
 Manual position updating valid for 4 hours
 REMOTE printer is connected to T Bus on transceiver
 LOCAL printer is connected to centronics on transceiver
 PASSWORD, one for config, one for transmit. If forget password replace non-volatile MEM in data terminal, but
will loose settings and addressbook then. On PC9000 password probably stored in capsat.cfg, erase file. Better
not use password
 Serial port settings: capsat, , com1, 4800, databits 8, parity none, stopbits 1
 4 languages: Spanish, French, English, Cyrillic
 In PC9000 diskette driver is B drive
 To program mobile number switch on, go to CONFIG TERMINAL, press return until “ : ”, switch off TT3020,
switch on again while pressing set, select 8, enter mobile number, select mobile, confirm, etc.
 Level on screen can be different depending status, different for idle and for communication (LES signal may be
lower or higher)

B/S/CNo
B
The bulletin board checks (B) is done by the main processor on the basis of the received data for each 8.64 seconds of data.
This 8.64 seconds of data is called a frame. The frame will contain packets, and the first and most important is the bulletin board packet,
which contains a frame number and the identification and possible services of the emitting station and this particular channel.
The bulletin board check will normally read 1, which signifies a valid bulletin board, but when tuning or transmitting it may read 0.
S
The Signal Strength (S) can vary from 0 to 5 where 5 is the best signal. You should have a reading above 2 to ensure a proper
communications link.
The resulting number is on a scale from 0 to 5 that has the following correspondence with the signal-to-noise ratio:

Signal strength 0 1 2 3 4 5
SNR in dBHz <29 29-31 31-33 33-35 35-37 >37
CNo
CNo >= 31dBHz

Synchronisation

This corresponds to the status of the front panel LED "login". The readout will be "Yes" of the transceiver can receive and decode the satellite
signal properly.

Logged in

This corresponds to the status of the front panel LED "login". The readout will be "Yes" if the user has issued a login command and received
a login acknowledgement from the Network Co-ordinating Station (NCS) in the current ocean region. The readout will be "No" the first time
the equipment is turned on, and if the user issues a logout command and receives a logout acknowledgement from the NCS in the current
ocean region.

TDM type

This tells you if the transceiver is currently tuned to an NCS or a LES channel, or in rare cases a stand-alone station. The possible readouts
are: NCS, LES, Joint NCS or Standby NCS,

TDM channel number

This is a number from 8000 to 14000, that corresponds to an Inmarsat-C system receives or transmit frequency.

Current channel

This information tells what type of channel the transceiver is using. If receiving the channel can be an NCS, LES, and if transmitting it can be
"Message" or "Signaling". When changing channel the readout will be "Returning".
The possible readouts are: NCS, LES, Signaling, Message or Returning.

Current protocol

This will tell you what protocol the transceiver is engaged in.
The possible readouts are:

Free / Pending / Sending Distress / Sending Distress Test / Login / Logout / Changing NCS / Scanning / Link Test / Transmission /
Receiving message / Confirmation request / Message delivery / Position report / Data report / Link Test request

The "Pending" status will appear if the Land Earth Station has postponed a transmission or a link test. In this case the LES will automatically
inform the transceiver when to try the protocol again.

Radio Holland BELGIUM - Antwerp TELECOM 74

TDM origin

This number is received in the frame-data from the current station. It will correspond to a station found either in the LES or the NCS table.
TDM frame number

This is the number of the current received data-frame. The numbers starts from 0 at midnight and ends a 9999 just before midnight, which
gives a new frame every 8.64 seconds. In case the readout shows "-" the transceiver did not receive a valid bulletin board (see column six in
the hardware part).

BB error rate

The transceiver keeps a statistics of the bulletin boards in last 100 frames. This gives an idea of the signal quality in the last 15 minutes.
When transmitting, the transceiver will not increase the error rate. This figure is transmitted to the LES as part of a link test.

Serial number

The serial number is mostly hardware identification but also a logical identification of a transceiver, as a specific serial number must follow a
specific mobile number.

Mobile number

This number is the call code of the unit. It is not used by the equipment to perform it duties, but is merely shown to help you remembering it.

Preferred ocean

This information will be used for the next login command you perform, and are also used at the daily scanning routine that a Maritime unit will
perform. If the scanning routine finds another NCS (in a different region) with a stronger signal than the one that you currently use the routine
will automatically login at that region, but it will not change the preferred ocean.
