1 Calculus I

This module aims to teach students how to determine the limit of a function using tables, graphs and algebra. It provides definitions of limits, notations used and limit laws/theorems to simplify limit calculations. Students are expected to follow guidelines, complete examples determining one-sided limits and limits at points of discontinuity, and discuss function behavior numerically, graphically and algebraically as x approaches values.

UNIT 1: EVALUATING THE LIMIT OF A FUNCTION

Learning Outcomes
This module on determining the limit of function will enable you to:
1. determine the limit of a function using a table of values and the graph of a function
2. evaluate the limit of a function applying limit laws

Resource
You will be needing the following for this module:
1. graphing tools like Graphmatica or Graphing Calculator

Expectations
You are expected to
1. follow the guidelines in accomplishing the module
2. accomplish the module completely

C LCULUS
Calculus is the mathematics that deals with change. Thus, it provides us to
construct simple models of change and infer the change’s consequences. The tools of
https://www.flaticon.co
calculus are limits, derivatives and integrals.

DEFINITION OF A LIMIT OF A FUNCTION
Let 𝒇 be a function that is defined at every number in some open interval
containing 𝒂, except possibly at the number 𝒂 itself. The limit of 𝒇(𝒙) as 𝒙 approaches
𝒂 is 𝑳, written as 𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝑳 if the following statement is true:
𝒙→𝒂
https://www.flaticon.co
m/de/kostenloses-
icon/buch_1341264
Given any 𝝐 > 𝟎, however small, there exists a 𝜹 > 𝟎 such that if 𝟎 < |𝒙 − 𝒂| < 𝜹
then |𝒇(𝒙) − 𝑳| < 𝝐

In words, the definition states that the function values 𝒇(𝒙) approaches a limit 𝑳 as 𝒙
approaches a number 𝒂 if the absolute value of the difference between 𝒇(𝒙) and 𝑳 can be made as
small as we please by taking 𝒙 sufficiently near 𝒂 but not equal to 𝒂.

LIMIT THEOREMS
To compute limits of functions by easier methods, the following theorems are used:

1. If 𝒎 and 𝒃 are any constants, 𝐥𝐢𝐦(𝒎𝒙 + 𝒃) = 𝒎𝒂 + 𝒃

𝒙→𝒂

2. If 𝒄 is a constant, then for any number 𝒂, 𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒄 = 𝒄

𝒙→𝒂

3. 𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒙 = 𝒂
𝒙→𝒂

4. If 𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝑳 and 𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒈(𝒙) = 𝑴, then 𝐥𝐢𝐦[𝒇(𝒙) ± 𝒈(𝒙)] = 𝑳 ± 𝑴

𝒙→𝒂 𝒙→𝒂 𝒙→𝒂

5. If 𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒇𝟏 (𝒙) = 𝑳𝟏 , 𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒇𝟐 (𝒙) = 𝑳𝟐 ,…, and 𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒇𝒏 (𝒙) = 𝑳𝒏 , then

𝒙→𝒂 𝒙→𝒂 𝒙→𝒂
𝐥𝐢𝐦[𝒇𝟏 (𝒙) ± 𝒇𝟐 (𝒙) ± ⋯ ± 𝒇𝒏 (𝒙)] = 𝑳𝟏 ± 𝑳𝟐 ± ⋯ ± 𝑳𝒏
𝒙→𝒂

6. If 𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝑳 and 𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒈(𝒙) = 𝑴, then 𝐥𝐢𝐦[𝒇(𝒙) ∙ 𝒈(𝒙)] = 𝑳 ∙ 𝑴

𝒙→𝒂 𝒙→𝒂 𝒙→𝒂

7. If 𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒇𝟏 (𝒙) = 𝑳𝟏 , 𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒇𝟐 (𝒙) = 𝑳𝟐 ,…, and 𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒇𝒏 (𝒙) = 𝑳𝒏 , then

𝒙→𝒂 𝒙→𝒂 𝒙→𝒂
𝐥𝐢𝐦[𝒇𝟏 (𝒙) ∙ 𝒇𝟐 (𝒙) ∙ … ∙ 𝒇𝒏 (𝒙)] = 𝑳𝟏 ∙ 𝑳𝟐 ∙ … ∙ 𝑳𝒏
𝒙→𝒂

8. If 𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝑳 and 𝒏 is any positive integer, then 𝐥𝐢𝐦[𝒇(𝒙)]𝒏 = 𝑳𝒏

𝒙→𝒂 𝒙→𝒂

EVALUATING THE LIMIT OF A FUNCTION Page 4 of 17

𝒇(𝒙) 𝑳
9. If 𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝑳 and 𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒈(𝒙) = 𝑴, then 𝐥𝐢𝐦 = if 𝑴 ≠ 𝟎
𝒙→𝒂 𝒙→𝒂 𝒙→𝒂 𝒈(𝒙) 𝑴

𝒏 𝒏
10. If 𝒏 is a positive integer and 𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝑳, then 𝐥𝐢𝐦 √𝒇(𝒙) = √𝑳
𝒙→𝒂 𝒙→𝒂
with the restriction that if 𝒏 is even, 𝑳 > 𝟎.

ONE-SIDED LIMITS
Some limits fail to exist. This can be attributed to the concept of one-sided limit.
The notation for limit from the left is 𝐥𝐢𝐦− 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝑳, which is read as “the limit of
𝒙→𝒂
https://www.flaticon.co 𝒇(𝒙) as 𝒙 approaches 𝒂 from the left is 𝑳.” The notation for limit from the right is
m/de/kostenloses-
icon/buch_1341264 𝐥𝐢𝐦+ 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝑳, which is read as “the limit of 𝒇(𝒙) as 𝒙 approaches 𝒂 from the right is
𝒙→𝒂

LIMITS AT INFINITY
In infinite limits, the value of the function 𝒇(𝒙) increases or decreases without
bound as the independent variable 𝒙 approaches a number 𝒂. In this activity, the
independent variable either increases or decreases without bound.
