SYLLABUS TOPIC: TRIGONOMETRY
SYLLABUS SUB-TOPI
CAL
S: Pythagoras’ theorem;
ig ratios of right-angled triangles.
TITLE: Using scale drawing and trigonometry to find the height ofa pole
Calculations
Use ofa scientific caleulator
BACKGROUND: Due to power cuts, the school decides to engage a local company to install
solar powered floodlights around the school. For uniformity purposes, the company seeks to
install lights whose poles match the height ofthe electric ones already there inthe school
‘THE CALA: You are tasked (0 supply the company with the height ofthe electric loodlights
‘You don’t have an appropriate measuring instrument. All what you have is a ladder which is
7.5m long, such that if you lean the ladder against the top of the vertical floodlight pole, the
{oot of the ladder is 2.4m from the pole
PART A
Draw a sketch of the ladder leaning against the top of the floodlight pote. [3 marks}
Part B
Using a scale of fom: Im draw a seale drawing of the ladder leaning against the top of the
Aoodlight pole, Measure the height of the pole, giving your answer in metres correct to 2
significant figures. (5 marks}
PARTC
With reference to the sketch that you drew in part A,
(i) apply an appropriate theorem to calculate the height of the floodlight pole, giving your
‘answer in metres correct to 2 significant figures,
Gi) use an appropriate trigonometrical ratio to find the angle that the ladder makes with the
‘ground when it leans against the vertical floodlight pole. Give your answer correct to 1 decimal
place. [10 marks}
PART D: Which one of the two answers obtained in part B and part C on the height of the
Aoodlight pole would you give the company. Give a reason for your choice. [2 marks}
CALA TIPS
~ Draw neat diagrams using a sharp pencil
~ Show clear working that is neatly laid out
~ Use a scientific calculator for your calculations.
