Fastener Spacing and Margin Data
Fastener Spacing and Margin Data
1. General
A. This topic supplies fastener pitch and edge distance data for the installation of fasteners in metallic,
composite and GLARE structure.
NOTE: The data given in the tables are applicable only to new holes.
NOTE: Where existing holes are re-used, the hole has to be checked for damage. If the hole is damaged
or outside the tolerances for the original fastener nominal diameter (Refer to Chapter 51-44-00),
an oversize fastener must be installed (Refer to Chapter 51-43-00). It is permitted to enlarge the
hole diameter up to a maximum of 2nd oversize 0.8mm (1/32in.)
NOTE: Before you begin the repair, check the edge distances and hole pitches. They must be within toler-
ances given in this chapter for the nominal diameters. If they are not, contact AIRBUS.
NOTE: Before you begin the repair, check that holes have not been previously oversized to its maximum
2nd oversize. If they are, contact AIRBUS.
NOTE: For new holes in assemblies with different materials, respect the edge distance values given in the
section corresponding to each material.
NOTE: For new holes in assemblies with different materials, consider hole pitch values which are suitable
for both materials. That means: - For metal/composite assemblies, consider the hole pitch val-
ues of composite. - For metal/GLARE assemblies, consider the hole pitch values of GLARE. - For
composite/GLARE assemblies, the hole pitch values are the same. - For metal/metal assemblies
with different alloys, the hole pitch values are 4 to 5 'D'.
NOTE: If you do a temporary repair, use the diameter of the fastener that you will use in the permanent re-
pair to calculate the minimum fastener pitch and edge distance.
(a) For information about the definition of edge distance, refer to Figure 002.
(b) The following abbreviations/terms are used in this topic: - 'E' is the edge distance for protruding
head fasteners - 'E1' is the distance for countersunk fasteners. The edge distance 'E' or 'E1' is the
distance from the center of the hole to the nearest edge of the component. - 'R' is the radius of
the bend of a sheet. - 'R1' is the radius of the doublers corner. - 'D' is the diameter of the holes.
- 'T' is the thickness of the sheet. - 'B' is the distance from the center of the hole to the beginning
of the radius (the minimum distance from re quired not to damage the radius 'R' (by the fastener
head, driven head, collar or nut).
(c) For further information about the edge distance for the installation of fasteners on chamfered
external doublers, refer to Figure 003.
(d) For further information about the edge distance for milled step, refer to Figure 004.
