EXPLORE
The 8 Parts of Speech (The Eight Parts of Speech - TIP Sheets - Butte College, n.d.)

A part of speech is a term used in traditional grammar for one of the nine main categories into which words are
classified according to their functions in sentences, such as nouns or verbs. Also known as word classes, these are
the building blocks of grammar.

Ex. The young girl brought me a very long letter from the teacher, and then she quickly disappeared. Oh my!

2. Pronoun- substitutes noun

Ex. The young girl brought me a very long letter from the teacher, and then she quickly disappeared. Oh my!

What is a verb?
Verbs are used to indicate the actions, processes, conditions, or states of beings of people or things.

Verbs play an integral role to the structure of a sentence. They constitute the root of the predicate, which, along
with the subject (the “doer” of the verb’s action), forms a full clause or sentence—we cannot have a sentence without
a verb

- From Free Dictionary. com

Verbs with Examples

A verb is a word that expresses a physical action (jump), a mental action (guess), or a state of being (exist).
Here are some more examples:
 A physical action (e.g., "to swim," "to write," "to climb").
 A mental action (e.g., "to think," "to guess," "to consider").
 A state of being (e.g., "to be," "to exist," "to appear").
You might find it useful to think of verbs as "doing" words.

Verbs Expressing Physical Actions

Here are some sentences with verbs that express physical actions. (In each example, the verb is in bold.)
 She sells pegs and lucky heather.
(In this example, the word "sells" is a verb. It expresses the physical activity "to sell.")
 The doctor wrote the prescription.
(In this example, the word "wrote" is a verb. It expresses the physical activity "to write.")
 Alison bought a ticket.
(The word "bought" is a verb. It expresses the physical activity "to buy .")

Verbs Expressing Mental Actions

While many verbs express physical actions (e.g., "to jump," "to dance," "to sing"), verbs can also express mental
actions. For example:
 She considers the job done.
(The word "considers" is a verb. It
expresses the mental activity "to
consider.")
 Peter guessed the right number.
(The word "guessed" is a verb. It expresses
the mental activity "to guess.")
 I thought the same thing.
(The word "thought" is a verb. It expresses
the mental activity "to think.")

Verbs Expressing a State of Being

A small but extremely important group of verbs do not
express any activity at all; they express a state of being.
The most important verb in this group (arguably of all) is
the verb "to be."

Here are some real examples with the verb "to be":
THIS MATERIAL IS FOR EDUCATIONAL USE ONLY AND NOT FOR SALE. Page 3 of 11
 Edwina is the largest elephant in this area. (The word "is" is a verb from the verb "to be.")
 It was a joke. (The word "was" is a verb from the verb "to be.")
 I am. (The word "am" is a verb from the verb "to be.")
Here are some other verbs that express a state of being.
 Alien life almost certainly exists. (The word "exists" is a verb from the verb "to exist.")
 It seemed funny at the time. (The word "seemed" is a verb from the verb "to seem.")

Interesting Fact!

“I am” is the shortest sentence in English.

The Types of Verbs

As we've covered, a verb can be categorized as a physical verb (e.g., to run), a
mental verb (e.g., to think), or a state-of-being verb (e.g., to be). However, a verb will
often be further categorized as one of the following:

Action Verb
An action verb expresses an activity that a person or thing can do. For example:
 Lee eats cake. ("Eating" is something Lee can do.)
 The bear chased the salmon in the shallow rapids. ("Chasing" is
something the bear can do.)

Compare those verbs with these:

 Lee likes cake. ("To like" is not an activity. It's a state.)
 The bear is hungry. ("To be" is not an activity. It's a state.)

Stative Verb
A stative verb expresses a state rather than an action. A stative verb typically relates to a state of being, a thought,
or an emotion. For example:
 I am at home.
 She believes in fairies.
 He feels elated.

Transitive Verb
A transitive verb is one that acts on
something (i.e., it has a direct object). For
example:
 I saw the dog. (Here, the direct
object is "the dog.")
 Lee ate the pie. (Here, the direct

object is "the pie.")

 The postman will give Sarah the letter.
(Here, the direct object is "the letter.")

Note: The direct object of a transitive verb can be found by

finding the verb and asking "what?" For example, "saw what?"
(answer: the dog); "ate what?" (answer: the pie); "will give
what?" (answer: the letter).

Intransitive Verb Teaching Learning Materials:

An intransitive verb is one that does not act on something See ppt slides # 10 – 14 for Verbs and Types of Verbs
(i.e., there is no direct object). For example: CTRL click to follow: Verbs | What Are Verbs?

What are Adjectives?

Adjectives are words that describe nouns (or pronouns). "Old," "green," and "cheerful" are examples of
adjectives. (It might be useful to think of adjectives as "describing words.")

This infographic shows where an adjective sits in relation to the noun it describes:

Adjective Before the Noun

An adjective usually comes directly before the noun it describes (or "modifies," as grammarians say).
 old man
 green coat
 cheerful one
("One" is a pronoun. Don't forget that adjectives modify pronouns too.)

Note: When adjectives are used like this, they're called attributive adjectives.

Adjective After the Noun

THIS MATERIAL IS FOR EDUCATIONAL USE ONLY AND NOT FOR SALE. Page 5 of 11
An adjective can come after the noun.
 Jack was old.
 It looks green.
 He seems cheerful.
In the three examples above, the adjectives follow linking verbs ("was," "looks," and "seems") to describe the noun or
pronoun. (When adjectives are used like this, they're called predicative adjectives.)

Adjective Immediately After the Noun

Sometimes, an adjective comes immediately after a noun.

 the Princess Royal
 time immemorial
 body beautiful
 the best seats available
 the worst manners imaginable

When adjectives are used like this, they're called postpositive adjectives. Postpositive adjectives are more common
with pronouns.
Teaching Learning Materials:
 someone interesting
 those present See ppt slides # 15-16 for Adjectives
 something evil
