Test Summary

This document summarizes the key topics and concepts that will be covered on Test 2 for MA 141-008. Students should study examples from their notes without solutions, rework WebAssign questions, and do additional practice problems. The instructor provides updated office hours and study locations. Main topics covered are linear approximations, related rates, curve sketching, L'Hospital's rule, indeterminate forms, and optimization. Students should know how to apply the relevant concepts and follow the steps to solve problems involving these topics.

Test 2 Summary

Fall 2010

This sheet is only intended to give you some guidance and shouldnt be the only thing you look at. To study for the test, it is a good idea to try doing all the examples in your notes without looking at my work, rework WebAssign questions, and try suggested practice problems for the sections you nd most dicult. As usual, I have oce hours Tuesday from 4-5 and Wednesday from 12:30-2:30. I am changing the usual hour I work in the Mathematics Multimedia Center (SAS 2103) this week only. I will be there on Friday from 9-10 instead. Also, I will plan to be in my oce on Friday from 1-2. 3.9 Linear Approximations The main concept from this section is the idea that a curve is close to its tangent line near the point of tangency, a fact we can use to approximate values on the curve. Know the formula to get the linear approximation/linearization (really just rewriting usual equation for a tangent line) and how to use the formula. I could ask you things like nding the linearization of a function at a value a and using it to estimate a value (like the ln(x) x 1 when x is close to 1 example) and/or using linear approximation to estimate a value where you have to determine the function and a (like the 8.062/3 example). 4.1 Related Rates Related rates will be covered on the test. You should know how to follow the steps to solve related rates problems. (You will be expected to draw pictures, identify variables, use correct units, etc.) Youll need to know how to use the pythagorean theorem/similar triangles and/or formulas for spheres, cones, cylinders, cubes, rectangular boxes. 4.2 4.3 Curve Sketching Know the denitions, theorems, and tests from the handout. Know how to nd critical numbers, absolute maximums/minimums over a closed interval, and the steps to use to sketch a curve. You could be asked to look at a graph to nd where it has local/absolute maximums/minimums, is increasing/decreasing, is concave up or concave down, etc. You could also be given the function and expected to nd these things. Make sure to identify each test you use by name. 4.5 LHospitals Rule and Indeterminate Forms Know lHospitals rule and how and when to use it (with indeterminate forms 0 , ) and how to 0 manipulate the other indeterminate forms (0, , 1 , 00 , 0 ) so that you can use lHospitals rule. Be able to identify indeterminate forms. When using lHospitals rule, be sure to identify the relevant indeterminate form or otherwise indicate that lHospitals rule does apply. 4.6 Optimization Optimization will be covered on the test. You should know how to follow the steps to solve optimization problems, including showing that the value obtained really is a maximum or minimum (whichever is desired). The formulas that you need to know for related rates could also show up here. Also be comfortable with area and perimeter of rectangles, circles, triangles ad the formula for the distance between two points on a graph.
