APL206 Assignment2

This document provides instructions for an engineering thermodynamics assignment with 5 questions. It details submission requirements and includes 2 figures illustrating thermodynamic cycles relevant to questions 2 and 4. Question 1 asks to find the overall COP of a combined refrigerator cycle. Question 2 asks to discuss the validity of a steam power plant cycle. Question 3 asks which is more effective for increasing heat engine efficiency: increasing hot reservoir temperature or decreasing cold reservoir temperature. Question 4 develops an expression relating heat transfer quantities of coupled power and refrigeration cycles. Question 5 determines the minimum heat supply rate required to a heat engine to maintain a house temperature using a heat pump.

Engineering Thermodynamics (APL 206)

Semester II, 2022-2023

Assignment-II [Marks: 10]

Instructions

• This assignment has five questions, and carries a weight of 10% towards the final grade.

• The submission deadline for this assignment is 24 April (Monday), during the lecture. Submissions
later than this will strictly be not entertained.

• You must write your name and entry number on the first page of your submission. If you
fail to do this, you will get zero marks.

• Please make sure your answers are legible.

Questions
1. Figure 1 shows a combination of two refrigerator cycles (REF1 and REF2). Find the overall COP as a
function of COP1 and COP2. [2]

2. In a steam power plant shown in Fig. 2, the heat given to the boiler is 2066 kJ/kg at temperature 165◦ C
for generating steam at saturated condition. The heat rejected by steam in the condenser is 1900kJ/kg at
54◦ C. Discuss and explain the validity of the cycle. [2]

3. Which is the more effective way to increase the efficiency of a Carnot heat engine (a) by increasing
the temperature of the hot reservoir, or (b) decreasing the temperature of the cold reservoir? Justify your
answer. [2]

4. A reversible power cycle receives QH from a hot reservoir at temperature TH and rejects energy Qo by
heat transfer to the surroundings at temperature To . The work developed by the above power cycle W is
used to drive a reversible refrigeration cycle that removes Qc from a cold reservoir at a temperature Tc and
discharges energy Q0o by heat transfer to the same surroundings at To . Develop an expression for Qc /QH in
terms of Tc /To and TH /To . [2]

5. A heat engine operates between two reservoirs at 800◦ C and 20◦ C. One-half of the work output of the
heat engine is used to drive a Carnot heat pump that removes heat from the cold surroundings at 2◦ C and
transfer it to a house maintained at 22◦ C. If the house is losing heat at a rate of 62,000 kJ/h, determine the
minimum rate of heat supply to the heat engine required to keep the house at 22◦ C. [2].
