Math9 q2 Week7 Las 1 Final

This document is a student's mathematics assessment on operations of radicals. It provides examples of adding and subtracting radical expressions with the same index. Similar radicals can be combined by adding or subtracting their coefficients and keeping the common radical. The assessment contains practice problems for the student to perform operations on radical expressions.

Similar radicals, or like radicals, are expressions with the same index and radicands. Thus, 2 , 3 2

, − 4 2 are similar radicals. On the other hand 5 and 3

5 are not similar radicals since they have
3 3
different indices. 4x and 2x are not radicals since their radicands are not the same .

Similar radicals can be combined by addition or subtraction. We can combine like radicals by adding or
subtracting their coefficients then affix their common radical.

Examples: Simplify:

1. ) 3 5 + 6 5 − 2 5 2. ) 3
x 5 − 23 x 7 − 3 x8

= (3 + 6 − 2) 5 Add /subtract the coefficients =

x 3 • x 2 − 23 x 6 • x − 3 x 6 • x 2

= 7 5 Affix the common radical = x3 x 2 − 2 x 2 3 x − x 2 3 x 2 Simplify each radical

3.) 7 98 + 5 32 − 2 50
Combine whenever
Look for the smallest possible factors of the radicands, where one factor is possible
a perfect square.

7 98 + 5 32 − 2 50 = 7 49 • 2 + 5 16 • 2 − 2 25 • 2

( ) ( ) (
= 7 49 • 2 + 5 16 • 2 − 2 25 • 2 )
= 7(7 ) 2 + 5(4) 2 − 2(5) 2

= 49 2 + 20 2 − 10 2

= (49 + 20 − 10) 2

= 59 2
