Speechless
It is
truly a great honor to stand here before you. My heart is overflowing with so much joy and
gratitude for this opportunity to speak on one of the most momentous occasions in our lives.
To the Veritas College of Irosin president, Rev. Father Odine L. Areola, to our school
Principal, Ms. Lorna B. Padura, to our senior high school Coordinator, Mrs. Bernadette M. Polo,
to our Guest Speaker, distinguished guests, esteemed faculty and staff, fellow graduates, family
and friends, ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon.
Let me begin this speech by telling a story. There was a 15-year-old boy who was raised
in a simple family. His mother is a housewife and owns a small sari-sari store, while his father
works on a farm. He has three siblings, and all of them had their own families, and that boy is the
last card of the family. Ever since he was young, he always dreamed of making his family’s life
better.
In January 2020, he had 200 pesos saved out of his school pocket. He thought of starting
a small business. But how? This little boy bought a cap and sold it to his classmate. He was very
happy because he had made a small profit. Because of it, he started making money by reselling
different things to his classmates. March 2020: COVID-19 has emerged. It made it difficult for
him to continue his small business; he had been worried, but his perseverance never stopped him
from pursuing his goals in life. He told himself that he shouldn’t lose hope because he had to
support himself and his family. He embraced the power of social media to sell his products.
Small profits make this little boy very happy, and as time passes, he has then gains customers.
His small business helps him save money and support his studies and his family financially.
Regardless of the challenges he encountered, he still remained glued to his core because he
believed that in life, no matter how hard the situation is, as long as you have strong faith, a clear
vision, willingness, and a burning passion in your heart, you will be able to hit the mark of
success. He also thought of starting another small business; he thought of baking cakes. The
funny thing here is that the little boy has no idea or background in making pastries. See how
brave this little boy is to try something out of his comfort zone? He started watching YouTube
tutorials and making lots of trials and errors. Despite the lack of knowledge and resources, this
little boy showed how passionate and dedicated he is to whatever he wants to pursue in life. I
admire how this little boy manages his time juggling between studies and running a business.
Because of his hard work, he has been able to provide for his wants and needs.
Fast-forward to 2021, when the boy became a man and entered the most grueling phase
of his life: senior high school. It’s the time when he explores life. While exploring, he was able
to identify his strengths and weaknesses. Mathematics is one of his weaknesses. There was a
time during the final examination when he put so much effort into studying all the topics.
However, it wasn’t enough because he got a failing score. He felt sad, disappointed, and
embarrassed. He belittled himself even though he excelled in other subjects. But an epiphany
happened. He understands that in the real world, he doesn’t need to be good at everything
because he can be his best at one thing. A painter doesn’t need to be good at math. Singers are
not required to be good at dancing. A musician is not obliged to be good at painting. Hence, it is
a reminder to every one of us that we should focus more on things that brighten our skills and
fields of strength where we can showcase who we really are so we can be the best version of
ourselves.
In the year 2022, the man decided to get out of his comfort zone. When an opportunity
was offered in pageantry in school, he embraced it and made the most of it. Even though his
hands were shaking and his knees were trembling, he continued the fight, and luckily he won.
The story of a man doesn’t end here because it is just a beginning of a wonderful journey.
As he continues to walk on his path, he wants to inspire people to follow their passion and to
believe in their dreams because, just like miracles, dreams happen when you believe. To my
fellow graduates, ladies and gentlemen, the protagonist of the story is none other than me.
My story may be typical for every one, but each of us has an authentic content to express.
We may have the same book which is life but we have different pages and chapters. As we end
our Senior High School Life, may we reflect on the various experiences, challenges, and
successes that have molded us into who we are today. I know that some of us are experiencing
hardships, challenges, and setbacks, but it’s important to remember that these difficulties are
only temporary and that we have the strength and resilience to overcome them. It’s okay to feel
discouraged or overwhelmed at times, but we mustn’t give up on ourselves because these
challenges and adversity will ultimately make us stronger, more compassionate, and more
successful individuals. Continue to have faith in yourself, even if no one else does. As Theodore
Roosevelt once said, “Believe you can, and you’re halfway there.”
To my parents Mama Siony and Papa Felix, friends, teachers, classmates, and all the
people who have been with me all the way, thank you so much for believing and supporting me.
I owe this to all of you. This is Angelo Habitan Garcia from Accountancy, Business, and
Management. Now signing off. Thank you.
