This patent describes an electric motor speed control circuit that uses a bi-directional semiconductor element and governor contacts to regulate the motor's speed. The governor contacts are closed when the motor spins at normal speeds, applying a potential to the semiconductor element's control electrode and allowing it to conduct. When the motor exceeds a set speed, the contacts open, blocking the element and reducing the motor's speed. A resistor and capacitor in parallel with the element ensure it blocks current flow when the contacts open. This circuit allows the governor contacts to carry only a small proportion of the motor current, reducing wear.
