Tutorial Assignment 3
(Q1) A flyback SMPS supplies a load of 40A at 5V. The source voltage is 240V dc and the
transformer initial magnetizing current is 0.4A. The power MOSFET is operating at a frequency
of 50 kHz with a duty cycle of 0.4. Determine the transformer turns ratio from primary to
secondary and its inductance. Assume ideal components and no ripple in load voltage. Find also
the open-circuit voltage across the semiconductor device.
(Q2) The buck regulator in Q2 has an input voltage Vs = 15V. The required average output voltage
Va = 6.5V at Ia = 0.5A and the peak-to-peak output ripple voltage is 10 mV. The switching
frequency is 20 kHz. The peak-to-peak ripple current of inductor is limited to 0.25 A. Determine

(Q3) A separately excited dc motor is fed from two single phase semi-converter, one in the
armature circuit and the other in the field circuit. Field current is constant at 2A. Motor armature
resistance is 0.8 Ω and motor constant is k = 0.5 V-sec/A-rad. AC voltage is 230 V, 50 Hz. For a
ripple free armature current and speed of 1500 rpm, calculate
(a) motor current and torque for a firing angle of 30o and
(Q4) A 3-phase, 400V, 20 kW, 970 rpm, 50 Hz, delta-connected induction motor has rotor leakage
impedance of 0.5 + j 2.00 Ω. Stator leakage impedance and rotational losses are assumed
negligible. If this motor is energized from a source of 3-phase, 400 V, 90 Hz, then compute

(Q5) A thyristor operating from a peak supply voltage of 400V has the following specifications:
repetitive peak current, Ip = 200 A, (di/dt)max = 50A/μs, (dv/dt)max = 200V/μs. Choosing a
factor of safety of 2 for Ip, (di/dt)max and (dv/dt)max, design a suitable snubber circuit. The
maximum value of load resistance is 10Ω.
(Q6) Thyristor shown in Fig. Q6 has I 2 t rating of 20 A2s. If terminal A gets short-circuited to
ground, calculate the fault clearance time so that SCR is not damaged.
