Work Sheet - Motion in Plane 22 June 21

This physics worksheet contains 20 problems related to motion in two dimensions. The problems can be categorized into three main types: 1) Conceptual understanding questions related to angular velocity, forces, vectors, and projectile motion. 2) Application questions involving calculating ranges, velocities, angles, and distances for objects moving under gravity or with initial velocities. 3) Proof questions requiring demonstrating relationships between variables that define parallel vectors or perpendicular vectors. The worksheet provides practice on core two-dimensional kinematic concepts and skills in calculus-based physics.

Physics Worksheet

11 - 4 Motion in a Plane Issue 21 June

1. What is the angular velocity of the minute hand of a watch in rad/sec?

2. The velocity of projection of a body is 10 i + 20 j. What is the horizontal range of the

projectile?

3. Two projectiles with their departure angles 30° and 60° have the same velocity at

maximum height. Determine the ratio of their velocities.

4. Two forces 6N and 8N acting at a point have their resultant 10 N. At what angle are they

inclined with each other?

5. Find the angle which i + j make with the x axis.

6. Rain falls with a speed 30 m/s. What direction should a cyclist moving south hold his

umbrella as to have shelter from the rain?

7. A car with a weight W is on a ramp which makes an angle θ with the horizontal. How

large a perpendicular force must the ramp withstand if it is not to break under its own

weight?

8. Prove that the vectors 2i - 3j – k and -6i + 9j +3k are parallel.

9. What is the condition that two vectors are perpendicular?

10. A dart is thrown at the bulls eye point P on a dart board with an initial velocity 10 m/s. It

hits a point Q vertically down on the rim, 0.19 s later. By what distance the dart miss the

mark. How far away was the thrower from the dart board?

11. A fighter jet flies horizontally with a speed 720 km/hr at height 1.5 km from the ground.

At what angle should a gun with muzle speed 600 m/s be fired to hit the jet. At what

minimum altitude should the pilot fly to avoid being hit?

12. A projectile has an initial velocity xi + yj. The range of the projectile is twice the height of

the projectile. Calculate ratio y/x.

13. A cricket ball is thrown at a speed of 28 m/s in a direction 30° above the horizontal.

Calculate (a) the maximum height (b) the time taken by the ball to return to the same level,

and (c) the distance from the thrower to the point where the ball returns to the same level.

14. A cricketer can throw a ball to a maximum horizontal distance of 100 m. How much

high above the ground can the cricketer throw the same ball?

15. The ceiling of a long hall is 25 m high. What is the maximum horizontal distance a ball

thrown with a speed of 40 m can go without hitting the ceiling of the hall?

16. Show that for a projectile the angle of projection is tan -1[ 4H/R].

17. Show that for a projectile the angle between the velocity and the x axis as a function of

time is = tan-1 [(v0y –gt) /v0x].

18. A cyclist riding at a speed of 27 km/hr approaches a circular turn of radius 80m. He begins

reducing his speed at the rate 0.5 m/s every sec. Determine the magnitude and direction

of the net acceleration of the cyclist?

19. The eye of a hurricane passes over an island in a direction 60° north of west with a speed

41 km/hr. Three hours later the course of the hurricane suddenly shifts due north and its

speed slows down to 25 km/hr. How far from the island is the hurricane 4.5 hrs after it

passes over the island?

20. Two particles 1 and 2 move with velocities v1 and v2. At the initial moment their radii

vectors are r1 and r2. How must these four vectors be interrelated such that the particles

collide?

nswer : at an angle 150° to the water current.
explanation : A man can swim in a still water with a speed of 2m/s.
i.e., speed of man , = 2m/s
now he wants to cross a river of water speed √3m/s along shortest path.
it is possible only when horizontal component of velocity of man with
respect to river will be zero.
Let man starts to swim at an angle α with vertical line.
then, velocity of man,
so, velocity of man with respect to river ,
=
=
so, horizontal component of velocity of man with respect to river = (√3 - 2sinα)
=0
or, √3 = 2sinα
or, sinα = √3/2 = sin60°
or, α = 60°
hence, he should swim, at an angle (60° + 90°) = 150° to the water
current.
