Group 3 Chapter 3

This chapter outlines the research methods and procedures used in the study. It employed a qualitative case study approach involving semi-structured interviews of a family in Legian 1, Imus Cavite. The interview questions focused on understanding the experiences of raising a child with Down syndrome. The responses were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify common themes. Key themes that emerged from the data provided insights into the challenges faced and support needed by families of children with Down syndrome.

CHAPTER 3

METHODS AND PROCEDURES

This chapter presents the research method and processes involved in

answering the statement of the venue where the study is to be conducted, the

description of who will be the participants, the data gathering instrument to be

used in the study and data gathering procedures in the collection of raw data to be

put in the analysis of data.

3.1 Research Design

A qualitative approach was the research method for this study. The process

of this research involves providing information and inspection to an observer,

which in turn allows for understanding and clarification of observations. Qualitative

research involves exploring and understanding a human problem. The research

design used in this study is a case study, which aims to be defined as an intensive

study about a person, a group of people, or a unit that aims to generalize over

several units. A qualitative approach considered more depth and meaning based

on their experiences. The process of research involves emerging questions

collected by the participants and the researcher’s interpretation of the meaning of

the data. The final written report has a flexible structure.

3.2 Research Instrument

The qualitative method of data collection that is used in this study is a semi-

structured interview. Semi-structured interview is a type of interview that combines

a pre-determined set of open questions with the opportunity for the interviewer to

explore themes or responses further. The instrument used in this study are printed

questionnaires.

The researchers go over and assess a few issues in reference to the stigma

surrounding down syndrome. To acquire information from all participants, the

researchers create various questionnaires.

The questions that the researchers prepared are:

1. Can you share us some of the basic information about your child with

down syndrome?

- How many of you are at home?

- Do you have any routine in taking care of him? If yes

-What are those?

2. Does your child attend school?

- Is he still studying?

- Can you tell us about his education?

3. As a parent what have you experienced while raising your child with

down syndrome?

4. What are the challenges do you encounter while taking care of him?

- How do you cope while facing those problems?

5. Does your child have medical treatment?

- Do you get any financial support from the government For those

treatments?

6. Do you have any advice for those parent who also have a child with

down syndrome?

3.3 Research Setting (Locale)

The researchers conducted this study in Legian 1, Imus Cavite,

Philippines to examine the lifestyle of a person with down syndrome and their

families experiences.

3.4 Research Participants

The sample was determined using purposive sampling, a non-

probability sampling technique where the informants are chosen for being able to

provide data that are most relevant to your study. In consideration of the

characteristics needed for this study, a chosen family from Legian 1, Imus Cavite,

will be interviewed to explore their experiences in handling children with Down

syndrome.

3.5 Data Analysis

The researchers assessed the gathered qualitative data using the standard

content analysis method. This study employed thematic analysis, which reveals

patterns in data and allows the researcher to fully comprehend the study's

conclusions. It is a useful technique for analyzing qualitative data because it

identifies patterns in participant communication that are not restricted by response

constraints. Respondent who had cared for a child with Down syndrome since

birth and were thus able to effectively respond to questions about the Struggle.

The content analysis helped to uncover underlying themes and trends throughout

data collection. The stages for the researchers' data analysis are listed below and

are based on Braun and Clarke (2006).

STEP 1: The open-ended survey question replies of participants were

analyzed. Read and re-read the facts to build comprehension, awareness, and

familiarity with it.

STEP 2: The study's data was identified, repetitive messages were

discovered, and codes were created to represent essential data in phrases.

STEP 3: Following that, the codes were combined to create an overarching

notion around which the significant terms found might be organized. The notions

that form these core ideas were examined to verify that they featured exact, proper

terminology that elucidated the focus of the thoughts. To confirm that the themes

accurately described the data, they were labeled and reviewed.

STEP 4: The replies to each member of the family were assessed using the

six processes described by Braun and Clark.

STEP 5: Defining themes includes describing exactly what the researchers

mean by each theme and determining how it helps them understand the data. The

process of naming themes entails coming up with a brief and easy-to-remember

name for each subject.

STEP 6: Themes were discovered from responses to the questions and

gathered reporting the family member as the final phase of the research. Each

theme is discussed in turn in the results or findings section. The researchers would

use data examples to explain how frequently the themes reoccur and what they

signify. Finally, in our conclusion, we review the key findings and show how the

analysis addressed our research question.
