SUPPLEMENTARY SEMESTER / GRADE IMPROVEMENT/ RE
–REGISTERED CANDIDATES
Program : B.E. : Mechanical Engineering Semester : VI
Course Name : Finite Element Analysis Max. Marks : 100
Course Code : ME62/ME603 Duration : 3 Hrs

Instructions to the Candidates:

● Answer any one full question from each unit.
● Any missed data can be assumed suitably.
UNIT- I
1. a) Explain the basic steps of FEA for a structural problem with a suitable CO1 (10)
example.
b) A bar is fixed at both the ends and is 600mm long. The cross sectional CO1 (10)
area of the bar is 200mm2 and E=70GPa. Using RR method determine
the displacement at the midpoint when a point load of 6kN is applied at
it, acting from left to right. Use second order polynomial for the
displacement function.

2. a) Explain plane stress and plane strain problems with suitable example. CO1 (04)
b) Discuss the importance of Rayleigh Ritz Method, Galerikin’s method and CO1 (06)
Finite elements method in engineering mechanics.
c) Derive the expression for deflection of a cantilever beam carrying a CO1 (10)
UDL across its length using Galerkin’s method.

UNIT– II
3. a) Derive elemental stiffness matrix for a 2-noded bar element. CO2 (08)
b) For the stepped bar as shown, determine the element stresses and CO2 (12)
reaction forces, given A1=75mm2, A2=40mm2, E1=E2=210GPa,
P=60kN, L1=800mm, L2=600mm, x=0.1mm.

4. a) Derive elemental stiffness matrix for a truss element. CO2 (06)

b) Determine the element stress for the truss as shown in the figure. Take CO2 (14)
A1=A2=A3=250mm2, E1=E2=E3=210GPa, L1=600mm, L2=600mm,
P1=50kN, P2=40kN.

iii) Simplex and complex elements
iv) Super parametric and sub parametric formulation
b) Derive shape functions for CST element. CO3 (04)
c) Using Lagrangian interpolation, derive shape functions for a four node CO3 (04)
bar element.

6. a) Derive strain – displacement matrix for a four node quadrilateral CO3 (15)
element.

b) CO3 (05)

UNIT- IV
7. a) Derive the Hermite shape functions of beam element. CO4 (08)
b) Determine the slope and deflection at the loading point. Take CO4 (12)
E=210GPa, P=40kN, L1=1m, L2=2m and the beam is of Ø60mm.

8. a) Determine the slope and deflection at ¼ L and ¾ L for a beam as CO4 (15)
shown in the figure. Take E=210GPa, q=12kN/m, L=2m, I=6x10-6m4,
M=15kNm.

b) Determine the global load vector for a beam loaded with the uniformly CO4 (05)
