ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

First of all, I would like to thank our English Teacher Samudrika Armstead for guiding us
in this task and giving me valuable advice and helped us through difficult times. Her
motivation and help contributed greatly to the successful completion of the project.
In addition, I would like to thank all the teachers who helped me by giving us advice and
giving us the resources, we needed.
Also, I would like to thank my family and friends for their support. Without that support i
would not have been able to complete this project.
Finally, I would like to thank everyone who helped me and encouraged me to work on
this project.

ACTION PLAN
Theme: Artificial intelligence pros and cons

 Artificial intelligence is a newly emerging field of research. Many companies and

governmental institutions depend on AI daily.

 While AI offers comfort and fast service, it also puts up many obstacles for the

user.

 The issue of privacy is one of the main problems faced. AI also enables the

monopoly of tech giants like google and Facebook.

 Some of the advantages of AI are that it can be used in widely varying fields like

medicine, mathematics, automobiles etc.

 In conclusion, AI has immense potential for many fields, but when we aim

progress, we must also consider the problems we may face and if AI is necessary

for mankind.

SUMMARY OF THE DOCUMENTARY

Developments in artificial intelligence (AI) are leading to fundamental changes in the

way we live. Algorithms can already detect Parkinson's disease and cancer, and control
both cars and aircraft. How will AI change our society in the future?

This documentary journeys to the hot spots of AI research in Europe, the USA and China,
and looks at the revolutionary developments which are currently taking place. The rapid
growth of AI offers many opportunities, but also many dangers. AI can be used to create
sound and video recordings which will make it more and more difficult to distinguish
between fact and fiction. It will make the world of work more efficient and many
professions superfluous. Algorithms can decide whether to grant loans, who is an
insurance risk, and how good employees are. But there is a huge problem: humans can no
longer comprehend how algorithms arrive at their decisions. And another big problem is
AI’s capacity for widespread surveillance. The Chinese city of Rongcheng is already
using an AI-supported 'social credit system' to monitor and assess its citizens. Does AI
pose a danger to our personal freedoms or democracy? Which decisions can we leave to
the algorithms - and which do we want to? And what are AI’s social implications?

REPORT
Artificial intelligence (AI) can be defined as a simulation of human intelligence processes
by machines, especially computers. Artificial intelligence is often self-taught, working
off a simple set of instructions to create a unique array of rules and strategies. Artificial
Intelligence plays a very important role in our day-to-day life. Today, artificial
intelligence helps doctors diagnose patients, pilots fly commercial aircraft, and city
planners predict traffic.

Companies like Amazon have already developed AI technology that allows customers to
buy items off the shelf without waiting in line to pay at the cashier. The store uses sensors
and cameras to monitor every activity of the customer, from what shelf they stop at to
what products they pick and so on. The customer will receive a bill soon as they exit the
store. In this case, AI has been used to provide comfort at the cost of safety. This is a very
common theme when it comes to the topic of AI. We associate many features available
on our mobile phones or other electronic devices with AI, like facial recognition and
biometric sensing. These features allow for easier access and cut out the inconvenience of
having to remember passwords or pin codes. But they pose a major problem, that is, most
of the facial recognition systems or sensors are a threat to the privacy of its user.

Urban planning also portrays wide applications of the use of AI. Surveillance cameras are
used in many cities to track every aspect of the lives of their citizens. The level of
surveillance in countries like China may come as a shock to those living in the west.
While surveillance can help in reducing crime rates, it also restricts the freedom of
people.

Another Artificial intelligence that has made a breakthrough is in the field of medicine.
Scientists have created Artificial Intelligence algorithms that can screen x-rays for certain
diseases. Artificial Intelligence works in ways that mimic the human brain. Just like how
the brain learns, AI learns. For example, AI which is designed to screen X-rays may not
do very well in the beginning, but after processing thousands of x-rays, its diagnostic
abilities will improve. Artificial Intelligence is also making fast progress in terms of
accuracy. A study was conducted in which both AI and radiologists made separate
diagnoses based on given chest x-rays. While in some cases the radiologists were able to

PAGE 7
provide a more precise diagnosis, in other cases, AI was able to surpass the radiologists.
Another example of the use of AI in medicine is an experiment that is succeeded could
help in early recognition of Parkinson’s. Using voice changes or irregular walking
patterns as an early indication of Parkinson’s, the algorithm can create a diagnosis with
an accuracy of 99 per cent.

Tech giants who depend vastly on AI tend to remain secretive. Visitors are not granted
access to headquarters of companies like Google, Facebook, or Apple. These companies
have a huge monopoly in the running of the world, as they contain almost all information
about much of the world’s population. In recent years, there has been an increase in
allegations against such companies. The lack of transparency has become a cause for
mistrust among consumers.

A device that is closely associated with the use of AI is Google Home, Alexa, or other
similar gadgets. These have a small chip attached to them that responds to a specific ‘hot
word’ upon which it listens to the command. A patent application showed that Google
home can listen to a variety of household noises and determine if two people are arguing
or if someone in your house is sick.

Lastly, one of the most promising applications of AI in self-driving cars. A key factor
required during driving is the ability to predict what comes next. This is where
researchers fall short. While in the controlled settings of a lab, the algorithms present in a
self-driving car works just fine, in a real-life setting the sensors in the car work
unpredictably and are therefore not yet ready for the road. While a safe and completely
driverless self-driving car is a distant reality, it is predicted that in about 20 or 30 years
this could be achieved.

A consequence of AI that must be discussed is unemployment. Due to the increased

spread, AI workers all over the world are replaced by machines or are having their
salaries drastically reduced. Since AI has made a prominent presence in all fields, the
spread of unemployment is no longer specific to any field. An example of this is how
cashiers are being replaced by self-checkouts in supermarkets.

PAGE 8
Another drawback of AI is that while the use of AI is quick and efficient, it cannot
replace the relationship between the consumer and provider. For example, while robots
can be used to perform surgeries by doctors working remotely, they cannot replace the
relationship that doctors have with their patients.

AI is currently being exclusively used in the arms race. This is a cause for rising concern.
AI can become dangerous to mankind in two ways. The first is if the AI is programmed
to be destructive and secondly If the AI is programmed to do something beneficial but
chooses a destructive method for achieving its goal.

Finally, one of the most destructive and concerning drawbacks of AI is the possibility of
machines being super intelligent. If machines become more competent than humans, then
they will function without humans. Also, the possibility that in such a case, the goals of
machines may not align with ours is concerning. Because AI has the potential to be
smarter than anyone else, we do not have a precise way of predicting how it will behave.
We cannot use the past technological advances as the main basis because we have never
created anything capable, knowingly, or unknowingly, to defeat us. The best example of
what we might face would be our evolution. Humans now control the planet, not because
we have the power, the speed, or the power, but because we are far wiser.

To conclude, while Artificial Intelligence provides scope for progress, it raises many
ethical dilemmas. Advancements in AI provides comfort while compromising the privacy
of its users. So, if we wish to continue developing AI safely, we must teach machines to
operate ethically.
