Toddler Tie Instructions

Materials:
Main fabric
w/ grain 45° angle
0-6 : ¼ yard fat quarter
6-12 : ¼ yard fat quarter
18mo.- 2T: 1/3 yard fat quarter
3T-5T: 1/3 yard 24”x24”
Contrasting fabric for lining
Fusible lightweight interfacing (Same amount as for main fabric or
about ¼ yard.)
Matching thread
Velcro (sew-in or fusible both work fine.)
Instructions:
Print out pattern pieces. Line them up and tape together for one
large pattern piece.
For reference, the pattern piece should measure these lengths,
from tip to tip, respective to which size you are making:
0-6 months: 15.5 inches
6-12 months: 20 inches
18 months – 2T: 23.5 inches
3T-5T: 27 inches
All seams in this pattern will be 1/4 - 3/8 inch seam (I use the edge of my presser foot as my
guide.) If you are more comfortable with a larger seam allowance, you can use a ½ seam,
but your tie will be slightly narrower. Always start and end seams by backstitching to
reinforce stitch.
1. Pin your pattern to your main fabric either with the grain or at a
45 angle, using the center line for angle reference. Cut out
fabric.
2. Pin pattern to fusible interfacing and cut out.
3. Using the dashed lining cut lines, cut out your two lining pieces
from main fabric or from contrasting fabric.
4. Line up your fusible interfacing piece to the wrong side of your
main fabric piece. Iron on according to manufacturer’s
instructions.
5. Pin your lining pieces to your main fabric piece. Using a 3/8 inch
seam, sew together along tip edges only.
6. Trim seam allowance at tips to help create a sharper point. Be

careful to not cut into your seam line threads.
7. Turn lining pieces to inside and press tip seams.
8. Bring long edges of main fabric piece together, lining included,

with right sides together. Pin along this edge.
9. Sew along this edge. Do not sew along diagonal point edges.
10. Trim threads and press long seam open.
11. At this point you will have a long tube. Flip this tube right-side-
out and press. (Pinning a safety pin on the narrow end and
feeding it through the tube will make this easier.)
Now we will make the neck strap.

12. Cut a long rectangle from your main fabric or contrasting fabric
measuring:
(As children’s sizes vary, you may want to measure your child’s shirt neck to be sure
to get a more accurate fit.)
0-6 months: 2 ½ ” x 14 ½ “
6-12 months: 2 ½ ” x 15”
18 months – 2T: 2 ½ ” x 15 ½ “
3T – 5T: 2 ½ ” x 16”
13. Iron the short edges of your rectangle under ½ inch.
14. Now fold your piece in half lengthwise and iron.
15. Open up and fold raw edges to center fold, and press.
16. Fold edges together along center fold and press again.
At this point you will have a piece approximately ½ wide, and it will
be 4 layers thick.
17. Sew close to the edges around either just the open edges, or
along all 4 edges of this rectangle.
18. Cut your velcro to measure ½ inch wide by 1-2 inches long, and
attach it to your ends by either sewing on, or ironing on
according to package instructions.
Now we will attach the tie to the neck strap.

19. Take your finished tie piece, and fold it so that you can see the
right sides of the tie, and the middle forms a point. You will
want to fold it, not in half, but a little bit off so that the narrower
end is shorter than the front tie end.
20. Tack the tie together by hand sewing 1 ½ inches down from
the mid-point. Secure your hand sewing with a knot & cut
threads.
21. From the backside, bring the narrower end on top of the wider
front end, and push both ends through the opening formed
after hand tacking.
22. Before you pull the ends all the way tight, insert your neck strap
through the fold. Now pull the ends tight.
Congrats, you are done! Put that tie on your little man, and admire
your work and your cutie!
