Activity 4.3 Central Tendency and Variability Measures

Directions: Solve the following problems as indicated.

1. USTP employees have the following monthly dues in thousand pesos to their
cooperative: 10, 40, 5, 20, 10, 25, 50, 30, 10, 5, 15, 25, 50, 10, 30, 5, 25 and 45.
Find the mean, median and mode.
Mean = 10+40+5+20+10+25+50+30+10+5+15+25+50+10+30+5+25+45 = 410÷18 = 22.78
Median= ( 20 + 25 ) ÷ 2 = 45 ÷ 2 = 22.5
Mode = 10
2. Three Students are named finalists in the search for A-1 Student of the year. The
evaluation papers revealed the following scores of the students in five different
areas: Solve for the range and variance and standard deviation of each student.

Student A - 97 - 92 - 96 - 95 - 90
Student B - 94 - 94 - 92 - 94 - 96
Student C - 95 - 94 - 93 - 96 - 92

Activity 4.4 Hypothesis Testing

I. Formulate the null and alternative hypothesis of the following problems.

1. A department store is interested to know if their average profit this year


decreased as compared to 30 percent last year.

H0: The average profit of the department store this year did not decrease as
compared to 30 percent last year.
H1: The average profit of the department store this year did decrease as
compared to 30 percent last year.

2. Five brands of batteries are tested to show their difference based on their
average battery lives.

H0: There is no difference on the average battery lives of the five brands of
batteries.
H1 : There is a difference on the average battery lives of the five brands of
batteries.

3. To determine which is more marketable, an experiment on the average number


of students dining each day on two fast food restaurant near a university is
conducted.
H0 : The average number of students dining each day in the two fast food
restaurants near a university is equally marketable.
H1 : The average number of students dining each day on the two fast food
restaurants near a university is more marketable.

4. Students of 5 different colleges took the same exam. You want to see if a
particular college outperforms the other by getting the mean score of each
college.

H0 : The particular college equally perform with the other colleges according to
the means score of the 5 students from different colleges who took the same
exam.
H1 : The particular college outperform the other colleges according to the means
score of the 5 students from different colleges who took the same exam.

5. A public opinion poll was conducted to determine if the preference of vehicle type
is dependent to the gender of a person.
