Introductory Message
Welcome to Media and Information Literacy!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Iloilo City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible
adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Media & Information Literacy Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the
teaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will
be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent
learning.

For the learner:

The Media and Information Literacy Activity Sheet is developed to help

you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides
you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an
active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the
activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the
agreed schedule.

Describing the Impact of Massive Open Online Course (MOOC)

I. Learning Competency (MELC)

Describe the impact of Massive Open On-line Course (MOOC)

II. Background Information for Learners

Media has changed the way we do things in so many ways. In education, one of
the major breakthroughs that occurred in this age is the Massive Open On-line Course
(MOOC) which enables the students from all walks of life and all locations to have
access to education.
A massive open on-line course is a free Web-based distance learning program
that is designed for the participation of large numbers of geographically dispersed
students.
The word MOOC was coined in 2008 by Dave Cormier, from the University of
Prince Edward Island for a course offered by the University of Manitoba, "Connectivism
and Connective Knowledge." There were 25 tuition-paying students from university and
2,300 non-paying students from the general public who took the course online. There
were RSS feeds for material and participation was facilitated through a variety of
venues including Moodle (a learning management system), blog posts, Second Life and
real-time online meetings.

Examples of MOOC which offer free courses online:

2. With MOOC, education can be accessible for all, regardless of race, ethnicity, location
and socio-economic status.
3. The MOOC can be a very good alternative most especially at this time of the COVID 19
pandemic. It enables the students to have access to whatever courses they want and
need so long as they can connect to the internet. Though this can be a safer way to
pursue education, the MOOC’s original aim to include everyone may not be entirely and
fully realized at this time because not everyone has access to a stable and reliable
internet connection.
