SPUR GEAR
 Spur gears are cylindrical
and teeth is parallel to axis
of rotation of the shaft
 Transmit power from one
shaft to another parallel
shaft
 Applications: Machine
tool gear box, automobile
gear box, Electric
Machines , oscillating
sprinkler, Mechanical
Watches, washing machine
and clothes dryer
According to Axis of Shaft

Double helical gears also called as Herringbone gear

Helical Gear
• The teeth on helical gears are
cut in the form of helix on the
pitch cylinder,
• i.e teeth are cut inclined to the
axis of rotation of the shaft
• Teeth of the helical gear with
parallel axis have line contact
as in spur gear.
• This gradual engagement
makes helical gears operate
much more smoothly and
quietly than spur gears
Herringbone gears
• To avoid axial thrust, two
helical gears of opposite
hand can be mounted side
by side, to cancel resulting
thrust forces
• Herringbone gears are
mostly used on heavy
machinery. Ex: Marine and
ship industry
 Helical gears are used in automobile, turbines in high
speed applications even upto 3000m/min.
 In spur gear meshing between the tooth occurs along
the entire face width of the tooth , resulting generate
noise and failure in case of high speed application.
There is a gradual pike up of the load by the tooth,
resulting smooth engagement and quite operation even
in high speed.
 Herringbone gears are mostly used on heavy
machinery. Ex: Marine and ship industry

WORM AND WORM GEAR
 Worm gear is a Non-parallel and non
intersecting
 Worm gears are used when large gear
reductions are needed. It is common
for worm gears to have reductions of
20:1, and even up to 300:1 or greater
 Many worm gears have an interesting
property that no other gear set has: the
worm can easily turn the gear, but the
gear cannot turn the worm
 Worm gears are used widely in
material handling and transportation
machinery, machine tools, automobiles
etc
