Installing ang Configuring
Peripheral/ Devices

Introduction

What does Peripheral Device mean? A peripheral device is an

external device that connects directly to a computer or other digital devices
but does not contribute to the computer’s primary function, such as
computing. It helps end users to access and use the functionalities of a
computer.
Since it is not a core device for the system, the computer can still
function without the peripheral, which simply provides extra functions.
However, some peripherals such as mouse, keyboard, or monitor tend to be
pretty much fundamental to the interaction between the user and the
computer itself.

Discussion

How to install Computer Peripheral Devices.

Peripheral devices are connected to the computer and help with
computer functions. These devices contain both the input devices, which are
used to give command to the computer and output devices, which help the
computer show the result to the user.

Input Devices:

These devices are connected to the computer and are used to send the
data to the computer internally. The following are some important input
devices:

Mouse: is one of the most common devices that one would find in a desktop.
It is normally plugged with USB connection. It would be connected through
the PS/2 port which is located at the back of the computer. In older systems,
one can find the serial port which was used to move the mouse around. The
old mouse contained a ball inside of it which helped in its movements. Recent
trends have changed the mouse because now it uses LED light. It is called
the laser mouse. The LED light that is emitted from the mouse can sense its
movements. The installation of the mouse is easy. One can just plug the
mouse and the drivers would be searched by windows itself. The mouse can
be configured from the control panel where its speed can also be improved.

3|P age
Keyboard: it is a famous device that is used today, and it is connected
through a USB connection at the back of the computer. Old keyboards used
to have the Mini DIN PS/2 connection with them. One would have to go
through the manufacturer's website to know the drivers for the keyboard and
get them installed when the keyboard connects with the computer.

Touch Screen: Touch screen is commonly used as well. They are normally
seen on mobile phones and other smart devices. Tablets also contain this
feature. Now it is even common to find a computer's large screen which works
with the touch screen system. It makes it very easy to type and navigate and
one can bring the keyboard on the screen and type there as well, hence one
doesn't have to install the keyboard. The configurations and the installation
of the touch screen are also done in a display when it is bought.

4|P age
Scanner: At a time, fax machines were widely used by people and even until
now, they still use it. Nowadays, tables have turned, and people use scanners.
Scanners have the ability to turn a paper's image into a digital one thus
sending the data from one place to another while keeping the same paper with
us is now an easy task and the data can be sent easily through the internet.
Scanners are now used a lot and one can simply scan a paper and save it in
any format he prefers.

Barcode Reader: If one goes to some supermarket or the retail environment,

one will see the barcode. It is a machine that is used to read the code which
is usually printed at the back of the products. The connection of bar code is
normally made through USB connection. Some old versions of the bar codes
also use the PS.2 connections to get connected to the computer. Barcode
readers use laser technology to read the barcode. The light comes and goes
when the code is exposed to the barcode reader. This light can directly damage
the eye so one has to be careful while using this machine. The barcode reader
contains a specific driver when it is connected and the driver is detected by
the windows to work properly.

5|P age
Microphone: Recording and using our voice through the computer is very
common. We use our voice through
chats and some voice recognition
software that are available in the
market. Microphones are handy in
these situations and one can use
them separately, through headsets
with built-in microphones and even
in laptops with their own
microphones installed in their
system. Microphones also have
specific drivers and the configuration
can be made through the control
panel.

Biometric Devices: These devices are used as security tools. They are mostly
seen on some portable devices. Some laptops contain a finger print reader to
serve as protection since only the administrator who set it can log in to the
computer.

6|P age
Output Devices:

Output devices are those devices which do not send the data into the
computer. In fact, through these devices, the computer communicates with
the user. They contain the devices like displays, printers etc. Since they are
a very vital part of the computer system, one should have enough knowledge
about them. The following are some of the output devices:

Printer: A printer is a peripheral device which makes a persistent

representation of graphics or text, usually on paper

Speaker: A loudspeaker is an electroacoustic transducer; a device which

converts an electrical audio signal into a corresponding sound.

7|P age
Webcam: Moving graphics and
videos are seen almost everywhere
today. Cameras are responsible for
taking these videos and graphics
into life. The “webcam” can be a
built-in camera found in laptops to
enable the features of video
chatting and taking pictures with
your device. You can also buy a
separate webcam that can be
connected to your computer.
One can also enjoy the live video if
it is plugged through the 802.11
wireless connections which go into the USB connection in the computer.

Computer Monitor: This is an output

device that displays information in pictorial
form. A monitor usually comprises the
visual display, circuitry, casing, and power
supply.

Key to Corrections
Acknowledgment
The Schools Division of Zambales would like to express its heartfelt
gratitude to the following, who in one way or the other, have contributed to
the successful preparation, development, quality assurance, printing, and
distribution of the Quarter 2 Guided Learning Activity Kits (GLAKs) in all
learning areas across grade levels as a response to providing the learners with
developmentally-appropriate, contextualized and simplified learning
resources with most essential learning competencies (MELCs)-based activities
anchored on the principles of guided learning and explicit instruction:

First, the Learning Resources (LR) Development Team composed of the

writers and graphic artists for devoting much of their time and exhausting
their best efforts to produce these indispensable learning kits used for the
implementation of learning delivery modalities.

Second, the content editors, language reviewers, and layout evaluators

making up the Division Quality Assurance Team (DQAT) for having carefully
evaluated all GLAKs to ensure quality and compliance to DepEd standards;

Third, the Provincial Government of Zambales, for unceasingly

extending its financial assistance to augment the funds for the printing of
these learning resources for use by learners and parents at home;

Fourth, the teacher-advisers and subject teachers, in close

coordination with the school heads, for their weekly distribution and retrieval
of the GLAKs and for their frequent monitoring of the learners’ progress
through various means; and

Finally, the parents and other home learning facilitators for giving the
learners the needed guidance and support for them to possibly accomplish
the tasks and for gradually helping them become independent learners.

To deliver learning continuity in this challenging circumstance would

not be possible without your collective effort and strong commitment to
serving our Zambaleño learners.

Again, our sincerest thanks!

The Management Team
