Subject:-Physics Class:-XII HLP- Current and Electricity

1. An electric toaster uses nichrome for its heating element. When a negligibly small current passes through it, its
resistance at room temperature (27.0 °C) is found to be 75.3 Ω When the toaster is connected to a 230 V supply, the
current settles, after a few seconds, to a steady value of 2.68 A. What is the steadytemperature of the nichrome element?
The temperature coefficientof resistance of nichrome averaged over the temperature range involved, is 1.70 × 10 –4 °C-1.

2. A resistance of R Ωdraws current from a Potentiometer. The potentiometer has a total resistance R0 Ω as shown in
figure. A voltage V is supplied to the potentiometer. Derive an expression for the voltage across R when the sliding contact
is in the middle of the potentiometer.

3. (a) Six lead-acid type of secondary cells each of emf 2.0 V and internal resistance 0.015 Ωare joined in series to
provide a supply to a resistance of 8.5 Ω. What are the current drawn from the supply and its terminal voltage?
(b) A secondary cell after long use has an emf of 1.9 V and a largeinternal resistance of 380 Ω. What maximum current
can be drawnfrom the cell? Could the cell drive the starting motor of a car?
2.0V

4. Figure shows a 2.0 V potentiometer used for the determination

of internal resistance of a 1.5 V cell. The balance point of the cell in open circuit is 76.3 cm. When a resistor of 9.5 Ωis
used in the external circuit of the cell, the balance point shifts to 64.8 cm length of the
potentiometer wire. Determine the internal resistance of the cell.

5.Two cells of voltage 10V and 2V and internal resistances 10Ωand 5 Ωrespectively, are connected in parallel
with the positive end of 10V battery connected to negative pole of 2V battery as shown in figure. Find the

effective voltage and effective resistance of the combination.

6. First a set of n equal resistors of R Ω each are connected in series to
a battery of emf E volt and internal resistance R Ω. A current I is observed
to flow. Then the n resistors are connected in parallel to the same
battery. It is observed that the current is increased 10 times. What
is ‘n’? NCERT EXEMPLAR (CBQ)

7.Let there be n resistors R1 ............Rnwith Rmax= max (R1......... Rn)

andRmin= min {R1 ..... Rn}. Show that when they are connected in
parallel, the resultant resistance RP<Rminand when they are
connected in series, the resultant resistance RS >Rmax. Interpret
the result physically. NCERT EXEMPLAR

cells connected in opposition to

each other. Cell E1 is of emf 6V

cellE2 is of emf 4V and internal
resistance 8. Find the
potential difference between the
points A and B. NCERT EXEMPLAR

9. Two cells of same emf E but

internal resistance r1 and r2 are
connected in series to an

external resistor R (Fig 3.7).

What should be the value of R

across the terminals of the first
cell becomes zero. NCERT EXEMPLAR

length. Conductor A is a solid wire of diameter 1mm. Conductor B
is a hollow tube of outer diameter 2mm and inner diameter 1mm.
