Lab 10

This document describes an experiment to study an AND logic gate. The objective is to understand the AND gate, its truth table, and circuit analysis. It provides background on Boolean algebra and how AND logic works - the output is only true if all inputs are true. The experiment involves building a circuit with two push buttons as inputs to an AND gate connected to a bulb as output. By testing combinations of the buttons according to the truth table, the AND logic function is observed.

Experiment Title: Studying AND logic element and its circuit analysis

Objective: The objective of this experiment is to study and understand AND logic gate, it’s
truth table and analyze it’s circuit.

Background data:
Boolean Algebra :
In 1854, George Boole performed an investigation into the “laws of thought” which were based
around a simplified version of the “group” or “set” theory, and from this Boolean Algebra was
developed.
Boolean Algebra deals mainly with the theory that both logic and set operations are either
“TRUE” or “FALSE” but not both at the same time.
For example, A + A = A and not 2A as it would be in normal algebra. Boolean Algebra is a
simple and effective way of representing the switching action of standard Logic Gates.

AND Logic Gate :

The Logic AND Function output is only true when all of its inputs are true, otherwise the output
is false.
The Logic AND Function states that two or more events must occur together and at the same
time for an output action to occur. The order in which these actions occur is unimportant as it
does not affect the final result. For example, A & B = B & A. In Boolean algebra the Logic AND
Function follows the Commutative Law which allows a change in position of either variable.
The AND function is represented in electronics by the dot or full stop symbol ( . ) Thus a 2-input
(A B) AND Gate has an output term represented by the Boolean expression A.B or just AB.

Procedure :
1. Make connections as following :
a) Power is given to two push buttons.
Page 2|3
b) From each output port of both buttons we gave 1 connection to the bulb and 1 to the input
of the AND Gate.
c) The output of AND gate was connected to an “S” bulb, which shows the output of the
circuit.
2. We powered on the compressor to build air pressure in the trainer.
3. Once the pressure is built in the compressor, it is switched off and the trainer is switched on.
4. We tested the circuit according to the truth table by giving power to switch buttons.
5. After studying the function of AND logic gate we powered off the trainer and remove the
tubes.
