AALI Syllabus

The Asian American Leadership Institute (AALI) is a 6-week leadership program offered in the fall semester at the University of Texas for UT students. Asian American Leadership Institute Fall 2011 Program Information

Brief Overview: The Asian American Leadership Institute (AALI) is a 6-week leadership program offered in the fall for UT students. It is hosted by the Asian Desi Pacific Islander American Collective (APAC) as a program to increase awareness of various issues faced by Asian Americans. AALI will also host workshops to train students on different leadership skills, such as program planning, budgeting, and public speaking. Workshops will be held every Tuesday from 6:30-8:00pm alternating from the MEC (Multicultural Engagement Center - SAC 1.102) and SAC 3.114. The meetings will usually begin with an ice-breaker and brief recap of the previous week. (Dates and themes are tentative and subject to change.) Schedule: September 6th, 2011 September 20th, 2011 October 11th, 2011

AALI Information Session AALI Information Session #2 Workshop 1 Asian American History and Activism at UT Location: MEC (SAC 1.102) Learn about the different Asian Americans and organizations that have made contributions to the UT community in the past and what they have done to gain a voice on campus. Workshop 2 Program Planning Location: SAC 3.114 Ever wondered what happens behind the scenes of planning a big event? Get an inside look on program planning and what it takes to be successful. Workshop 3 Team and Community Building Location: MEC (SAC 1.102) Learn about building bonds within your small groups while working together to complete a task. Community building is one of the key principles to being a leader as having good team spirit will help you communicate your ideas to its fullest capabilities. Workshop 4 Social Justice/Identity Location: SAC 3.114 Most people dont see Asian Americans as a marginalized group. What does this mean for us as a community? Well take a look at words like privilege and what it means to have or not have it.

Workshop 5 Diverse Representations of Asian Americans: Asian Americans in the Arts and the Media Location: MEC (SAC 1.102) How many Asian Americans can you name in the entertainment industry? Find out the truth about how were represented and in what ways Asian Americans are getting their voice heard in the media.

Workshop 6 Professional Life after UT Location: SAC 3.114 What happens after college? is a question most college students make. Learn about what kinds of hurdles Asian-Americans must make in the workplace and what kinds of opportunities there are after graduation.
