GETTING READY
Welcome to your new subject for this second semester! You are now half
way in your journey as a Senior High School student.
Have you ever asked yourself the questions, “Who am I?”, “Why am I like this?”,
‘Why do I feel this way?”, “Why is this happening to me?”
These questions have probably crossed your minds, though you might not have
satisfactorily answered them for lack of ideas.
In this lesson, you will discover some things about yourself and provide you some
knowledge and awareness about the stage you are currently in. You may now start
exploring our first lesson.
CONCEPT NOTES
Defining the Concept of the Self
1. Self is the union of elements namely: body, thoughts, feelings or emotions, and
sensations that constitute the individuality and identity of a person.
Personality
Being aware of how you look, think, feel, and act helps you to know more
about yourself. You gather more information when you identify your strengths and
weaknesses. In knowing your strengths, you are empowered to do developmental
tasks.
In becoming more aware of your strengths, you are equipped with skills

essential in making wise decisions in life; you are able to analyze complex situations
logically and sensibly; and you can be more confident in doing your tasks and
become more competent in achieving your goals (Cleofe, 2016. p.5).
Now that you have finished the basics of knowing oneself, let us move on to
developing yourself as a whole person.
What is your concept of a whole person? Would you consider yourself a whole
person?
In this lesson, you will discover how the different aspects of human person, which
makes up yourself, relates to or affects your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
What you are and who you are now is the result of the pattern and process of
developmental changes happening during adolescence. It is important to recognize
yourself as integrated whole, shaped by the interrelationship of the various aspects of
your life. You need to delve into the deeper levels of your behaviors, capabilities and
possibilities, motivations, beliefs, values and social identity for a greater chance of
achieving holistic development.
At this point in your life, your studies hold great promise in realizing your
dreams through the career choice you make. To do so, it is imperative to strive to
develop the key aspects of yourself: physical, emotional, cognitive, social, spiritual
and moral. In the process, your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, should work
together and reflect the changes that will mark your growth. This should result in an
ability to manage emotions and reflect good actions.
Your thoughts, feelings, and actions interplay with one another. Your thoughts
determine your mood or emotions. You act upon what you think and feel. Your way of
thinking is influenced by your personal, familial and social experiences, which all may
not be positive.
Let us now test your understanding by answering and doing the assessments
on next pages.
