Lesson Content

GETTING READY
 Welcome to your new subject for this second semester! You are now half
way in your journey as a Senior High School student.
 Have you ever asked yourself the questions, “Who am I?”, “Why am I like this?”,
‘Why do I feel this way?”, “Why is this happening to me?”
 These questions have probably crossed your minds, though you might not have
satisfactorily answered them for lack of ideas.
In this lesson, you will discover some things about yourself and provide you some
knowledge and awareness about the stage you are currently in. You may now start
exploring our first lesson.

CONCEPT NOTES
Defining the Concept of the Self

1. Self is the union of elements namely: body, thoughts, feelings or emotions, and
sensations that constitute the individuality and identity of a person.

3 |W1&2 PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT 12

 The body constitutes your physical attributes, your health, your posture, and
your poise.
 Your thoughts, the way you think, and you perceive things around you, affect
how you feel about them and bring about sensations.
 These emotions and sensations that you experience prompt you to act and
behave the way you do.
2. The union of these elements makes up your character or personality and
essentially distinguishes you from others (Cleofe, 2016. p.3)

Personality

Personality in psychology refers to the set of behaviors, feelings, thoughts and

motives that identifies an individual.
It is the essence of who we are and is the embodiment of one’s physical,
psychological, cognitive, affective and spiritual self. Therefore when we speak of the
“self”, we will describe it in personality terms (Santos, 2016. p.15).

Nature, Nurture and Personality

Personality is influenced by both nature (Heredity) and nurture (environment).

There is no single gene that creates a trait. It is always a complex combination of
genes, environmental exposure and experiences and cultural backgrounds.
Physical attributes such as heights and skin complexion, as well as
psychological characteristics such as temperament, are hereditary.
Some of your attributes, or traits, however, may be brought about by the
environmental factors.
No two individuals are exactly alike. Thus, you are unique, and that makes you
special.

The Importance of Self-Awareness

When you have a more or less accurate knowledge or understanding of

yourselves, you are able to experience yourselves truthfully as unique and separate
individuals. Self-awareness keeps you away from living a lie, fantasy, imagination, or
pretension (De Guzman & Nicolas, 2016. p.1).
Self-awareness also empowers you to make personal improvements by
building on your areas of strengths and ascertaining aspects where you would like to
make progress.
Self-awareness is the starting point that leads to any improvement, as self-
improvement is hardly possible without self-awareness (Cleofe, 2016. p.7).

Identifying Your Strengths and Weaknesses

Being aware of how you look, think, feel, and act helps you to know more
about yourself. You gather more information when you identify your strengths and
weaknesses. In knowing your strengths, you are empowered to do developmental
tasks.
In becoming more aware of your strengths, you are equipped with skills
4 |W1&2 PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT 12
essential in making wise decisions in life; you are able to analyze complex situations
logically and sensibly; and you can be more confident in doing your tasks and
become more competent in achieving your goals (Cleofe, 2016. p.5).

As adolescents, you will also experience significant changes in various aspects

of your lives. Thus, the need for you to develop holistically.

DEVELOPING THE WHOLE PERSON

Now that you have finished the basics of knowing oneself, let us move on to
developing yourself as a whole person.
 What is your concept of a whole person? Would you consider yourself a whole
person?
In this lesson, you will discover how the different aspects of human person, which
makes up yourself, relates to or affects your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

It is a universal knowledge that a person is endowed with different aspects of

personality: physical, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual or moral aspects. All
these aspects make one a complete person. Though all the aspects are present in a
person, they differ in degree and level of development. One or two aspects may be
superior compared to others and may affect the totality of a person. Thus a person
may experience personality crisis during the unfolding phases of adolescence
development.

What you are and who you are now is the result of the pattern and process of
developmental changes happening during adolescence. It is important to recognize
yourself as integrated whole, shaped by the interrelationship of the various aspects of
your life. You need to delve into the deeper levels of your behaviors, capabilities and
possibilities, motivations, beliefs, values and social identity for a greater chance of
achieving holistic development.

Holistic Development: Thoughts, Feelings, and Behaviors

At this point in your life, your studies hold great promise in realizing your
dreams through the career choice you make. To do so, it is imperative to strive to
develop the key aspects of yourself: physical, emotional, cognitive, social, spiritual
and moral. In the process, your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, should work
together and reflect the changes that will mark your growth. This should result in an
ability to manage emotions and reflect good actions.
Your thoughts, feelings, and actions interplay with one another. Your thoughts
determine your mood or emotions. You act upon what you think and feel. Your way of
thinking is influenced by your personal, familial and social experiences, which all may
not be positive.
Let us now test your understanding by answering and doing the assessments
on next pages.

Summary weaknesses, which empower you to actualize your potentials to
the fullest and to value yourself more, thus helping you to reach
your goals.

Holism is about seeing things as a whole and as something that is

bigger than the sum of its parts. To understand people better is to
see them in their totality. It is believed that balance and integration
of the different aspects is a desired condition that will affect the
person in positive ways.
