Assignment 2

The document discusses a 5 question assignment on torsion and bending mechanics. The questions involve calculating stresses and forces in various mechanical systems including gear trains, shafts, beams, and plates. Dimensions, forces, and material properties are provided. Students are asked to relate concepts, draw free body diagrams, and determine stresses, forces, and the location of a neutral axis.

HTC251: SOLID AND STRUCTURAL MECHANICS 1

Assignment 2 (6%)
Due Date: 22/04/2022
TOPICS: TORSION AND BENDING
Discuss and relate the concepts of these chapters on every working out you do. Draw free
body diagrams where necessary. All dimensions are specified.

Question 1: (8 marks)

Three shafts and four gears are used to form a gear train that will transmit power from the
motor at A to a machine tool at F. (Bearings for the shafts are omitted in the sketch.) The
diameter of each shaft is as follows: dAB =16 mm, dCD =20 mm, dEF = 28mm. Knowing that
the frequency of the motor is 24 Hz and that the allowable shearing stress for each shaft is 75
MPa, determine the maximum power that can be transmitted.

Question 2: (8 marks)

The shaft-disk-belt arrangement shown is used to transmit 3 hp from point A to point D. (a)
Using an allowable shearing stress of 9500 psi, determine the required speed of shaft AB, (b)
Solve part a, assuming that the diameters of shafts AB and CD are, respectively 0.75 in. and
0.625 in.
Question 3: (6 marks)

The cantilevered wide-flange steel beam is subjected to the concentrated force P at its end.
Determine the largest magnitude of this force so that the bending stress developed at A does
not exceed σallow = 180 MPa.

Question 4: (8 marks)
The reinforced concrete beam shown is subjected to a positive bending moment of 175 kN m.
Knowing that the modulus of elasticity is 25 GPa for the concrete and 200 GPa for the steel,
determine (a) the stress in the steel, (b) the maximum stress in the concrete.
Question 5: (10 marks)

A rigid circular plate of 125-mm radius is attached to a solid 150 x 200-mm rectangular post,
with the center of the plate directly above the centre of the post. If a 4-kN force P is applied
at E with ϴ = 30˚ determine (a) the stress at point A, (b) the stress at point B, (c) the point
where the neutral axis intersects line ABD.
