Revision Math - Statistics

The document contains information about box plots and outliers from several data sets: 1) A box plot shows the scores of 39 competitors in a village quiz. The interquartile range and range are calculated. The distribution is skewed to the right. Two scores are updated on the box plot. 2) A box plot shows times for office workers to travel to work. The range and interquartile range are found. The distribution is skewed to the left. Two travel times are updated and a new box plot drawn. 3) Box plots show the angles drawn by students at 20 and 70 degrees. Calculations are done to find outliers, medians, and quartiles. The students were more accurate

Questions

Q1.
Chi wanted to summarise the scores of the 39 competitors in a village quiz. He started to produce the
following stem and leaf diagram

He did not complete the stem and leaf diagram but instead produced the following box plot.

Chi defined an outlier as a value that is

greater than Q3 + 1.5 × (Q3 − Q1)
or
less than Q1 − 1.5 × (Q3 − Q1)
(a)  Find
(i)  the interquartile range
(ii)  the range.
(2)
(b)  Describe, giving a reason, the skewness of the distribution of scores.
(2)
Albert and Beth asked for their scores to be checked.

Albert's score was changed from 25 to 37

Beth's score was changed from 54 to 60

(c)  On the grid, draw an updated box plot.

Show clearly any calculations that you used.

Q5.
The box plot shows the times, t minutes, it takes a group of office workers to travel to work.

(a)  Find the range of the times.

(1)
(b)  Find the interquartile range of the times.
(1)
(c)  Using the quartiles, describe the skewness of these data. Give a reason for your answer.
(2)

Adam and Betty are part of the group of office workers and they have both moved house.
Adam's time to travel to work changes from 32 minutes to 36 minutes.
Betty's time to travel to work changes from 38 minutes to 58 minutes.
Outliers are defined as values that are more than 1.5 times the interquartile range above the upper
quartile.

(f)  Showing all necessary calculations, determine how the box plot of times to travel to work will change
and draw a new box plot on the grid below.

Q2.

The histogram in Figure 1 shows the time taken, to the nearest minute, for 140 runners to complete a fun
run.

Use the histogram to calculate the number of runners who took between 78.5 and 90.5 minutes to
complete the fun run.

Q7.
Each of 60 students was asked to draw a 20° angle without using a protractor. The size of
each angle drawn was measured. The results are summarised in the box plot below.

(a)  Find the range for these data.

(1)
(b)  Find the interquartile range for these data.
(1)
The students were then asked to draw a 70° angle.
The results are summarised in the table below.

(c)  Use linear interpolation to estimate the size of the median angle drawn. Give your
       answer to 1 decimal place.
(2)
(d)  Show that the lower quartile is 63°
(2)
For these data, the upper quartile is 75°, the minimum is 55° and the maximum is 84°

An outlier is an observation that falls either

more than 1.5 × (interquartile range) above the upper quartile or
more than 1.5 × (interquartile range) below the lower quartile.

(e)  (i)  Show that there are no outliers for these data.

(ii)  Draw a box plot for these data on the grid below.

(5)
(f)  State which angle the students were more accurate at drawing. Give reasons for
      your answer.
